This morning I noticed a lot of oil under my car. It appears that after topping up last night I put the oil cap on 'backwards' ie with the writing and symbol upside down when looking from the front. After cleaning up I discovered a red and white painted marks that line up when it's the correct way round and after further experimentation sure enough oil comes out around the cap when they are not lined up and doesn't when they are. This points to it having happened before and a dealer not fixing it properly! It was a lease car before I got it with everything done at main dealer.
luckily I only drove about 50 miles last night and lost about a litre and it was still registering on the dipstick,so Ive refilled and cleaned off with wd40 and a rag, whether the alternator survives remains to be seen.
My issue now is I'm sure the oil pressure light is taking a fraction of a second to extinguish on start up,it may have always done it and I'm just paranoid. On the e-vic the oil pressure is 115 which is what it's always read, so- paranoia or impending disaster?
I think it very unlikely you have caused any engine damage as you only lost a small amount of oil.
However, I would give the alternator a good hose out and then dry out with an airline.

I can't comment on the effect of putting the oil filler cap on the wrong way, but I'm surprised if that should make a difference. More likely the cap wasn't secure. Do you have an alternator shroud fitted? That will provide some protection against oil spills. Losing 1 litre shouldn't have caused any engine damage. EVIC oil pressure is meaningless, as its a default value set by the ECU. The oil pressure sensor fitting in the filter housing is blanked off.

My 2008 model had the painted line from new, nothing to do with dealers. I have always fitted it so the lines mate up but didnt realise what the consequences could be if it was 180 degrees out. Engine should be ok but dont think alternator will survive for many more months if it got covered.
Oil pressure reading on EVIC is irrelevant. There is NO oil pressure transducer fiited.

Thanks for the replies, interesting that the paint marks are from the factory, and I've tried it twice today the 'wrong' way' (ooh err missus.etc) and both times oil sprayed onto the fuse box bracket. I've stopped using it until I can get a new oil cap, probably from Merc dealer as theres one half a mile from my front door.
I haven't got an alternator shield so am fully prepared for it to die -whaddya gonna do?
As for the comedy oil pressure reading on the e-vic.well.it's s#*t like that thats making me consider rejoining the BMW/Audi sheep!
I have never liked the fact that the oil pressure isn't monitored.
I had it out with dealers at one time and they assured me it is monitored but it definitley IS NOT.
It does have oil level monitor, but that is a poor substitute. EVIC reading is just fiddled with a fixed reading.
Hope you get away without having to swap alternator ???
Can you see why the oil cap leaks if fitted wrong way round ??

You can't complain too much, as we're not supposed to know about the "hidden" EVIC menu. The workshop manual also has loads of anomalies and we're not supposed to have that either. On the other hand, there is an educational aspect in discovering how to differentiate between fact and fiction.
I haven't looked for one but just cos there's no sender from the filter housing doesn't mean it hasn't got one, they sometimes are fitted in an oil gallery and sticking out of the block, like I said I haven't looked for one yet but it must have an oil switch somewhere to warn you of low pressure with the red oil light on the dash

Definitley does not measure oil pressure on the 300C which is ridiculous.
The reading is fiddled on the EVIC to a fixed pressure. If there was an oil pressure sender the reading would change on the EVIC but it never changes. Its a fixed reading of 115 under all engine operating conditions.
The Oil LEVEL sender brings up the Oil Warning Light.
