Hi Murph (if you dont mind being called that).

Absolutely superb, after going through the formalities Sandy handed the beast over at about 12:30 this afternoon and I was off.

Can I just say, it is only day one, but my impression after having a detailed look at the fit, finish & quality of the plastics is that I cannot complain one bit.

The drive is also superb, minimal body roll (not that I've been driving particularly quickly) Keeping well below 3,000 rpm is easy as there is plenty of torque. Oh and it is so quiet & relaxing.

Only a tiny bit concerned about running in, as the manual says, and I quote "Drive moderately during the first 500km (300 miles). After the initial 100km (60 miles), speeds up to 80 or 90 km/h (50 or 55 mph) are desirable.

Whats that all about? I have been up to 70 mph for 20 or 30 miles today - and some prior to 60 miles on the clock, although I havent yet been above about 2,500 rpm. Should I have been sitting at max 55 mph until I reached 300 miles on the clock?

Also reset the average mpg and drove gently at 60 - 65 mph for a few miles, and showed 27.9 on the EVIC. I think it must be set up for US like yours was, or else do I start worrying slightly? I suppose I've only got about 100 miles on the clock so far so probably far too early to tell. If I brim it after the first tank is done, I'll get a better idea

Anyway, plenty of admiring onlookers today too!

I'm off out now to, er, "test the lights" or some such excuse - he he.

All in all a fab first day, and when I get up to your heady heights of fuel consumption I will be in clover.

Cheers

Just

PS Just one foible, Anyone know of a way to attach the filler cap to the car when fuelling, I don't want to put it on the roof / trunk lid, or have to keep hold of it, and all my previous cars have either had a bracket, a plastic ring attached to the cap & body or a notched cap which sits on top of the lid.

There are a couple threads on this if you search...but I did what was suggested in post 97 of this thread and have been satisfied with it since.

Gas caps & holder

Hey Just

I've just heard that the chippy in the next town has put a new sign up in the window - I think that you'd best go and check it out !!

I'm with you on the plastics thing - after what the UK motoring press initially said, I was expecting something that was made out of milk cartions. I find the plastic/trim/fittings to be very accepatable - If I'd wasnted a woodden interior in a big car I'd have laid out another £20000 and got an Jag XJ.

The bit about running in, in the manual is IMHO completely pants and not realistic in the real world. The best running in programme I found is from Honest John and was forwarded to me by Geordie. You can find it here.

My EVIC version is v 4.08 and is dated 10/25/05 (silly American way of doing dates). I seem to remember getting about 28 mpUSgal - 32 mpUSgal when Arnie was brand new - but I was doing fairly long runs at a time. Doing a lot urban driving doesn't do any MPG favours at all. On my last tank of 500 mile of assorted driving I got 35 mpUKgal - which I think is great.

I suspect that there won't be many 300C owners in your part of the world - have you had any questions passed your way yet, I had one guy TELLING me today that Arnie is a Bentley prototype and that the badges on the front/back are a disguise.

as for the fuel cap, the cunning plan that jjs recommends doesn't work for me as Arnie has a locking cap and has no band to secure a clip to, obviously I don't know if your car (any names for it yet ?) is the same - on the few occassions I need to fuel up, I put the fuel cap on the pump. What a tribute to the car that the only foilble that you and I have found is a 10p piece of missing plastic.

Well it's time to go, someone has just told me that a roadsign has blown over 25 mile away, I'd best drive over there as quick as I can (on our nice deserted roads, with my xenon headlights on and Arnies V6 purring) and pick it up before someone gets hurt.

Look forward to seeing some piccies.

MTC

p.s. Murph is a grand name to be called. it certainly beats moggie/moggy etc that Belmont (the haggis molester) always manages to drop in at least once a day.

Hi Just and Congratulations! Glad to hear that your expectations have been exceeded! I hope the weather in your corner was somewhat fairer than up here. I delivered a Hemi today in the pissing rain. It has to be said though that watching the car drive towards me, through that light drizzle that Scotland owns sole right to, with the xenons sparkling; never has a car looked more intimidating!

The running in thing is far more than 2-300 miles. I havn't read the thread to which our resident feline refers and so can't comment upon it. I have however run 3 WH Grand Cherokees with the same engine and have found that a great reward awaits the patient runner inner! On each of these vehicles simply being gentle for the first 1000-1500 miles has ensured a MASSIVE hike in performance, consistent achievement of the advertised fuel economies and to date (touch wood) not a single problem with any of our ex-demo units.

It is difficult, particularly in the first few days, to resist the temptation of the throttle but, IMHO, it is well worth the effort. You CRD guys are still few and far between in here yet and so i will be keen to hear your feedback over time. From what i can gather the lake districts answer to the beast of bodmin (is that better than moggie/y?) was amongst the first CRD's in the country. Murph has religiously (he tells us) stuck to running Arnie in properly and his combined MPG say it all!

Hope the weekend brings many happy miles and look forward to some pics.

Belmont.

Hi Belmont

Yes - I got a couple of pics today although Sandy was trying to be camera shy! The weather was a bit pants as you say so the pics will be a bit dark. I'll try and post something tomorrow.

Just been out again tonight for a fairly long run and filled up again, reckon I've got about 30 mpg over today's 150 miles of motoring, not too bad considering lots of stop & start, 4-up for most of the day (in-laws are up here staying at the moment (very impressed)). I think that the rain sensing wipers will be great for the unique Scottish weather conditions you described so well.

Blue is probably nearly as bad as black for showing up the dirt, so I'll probably be washing the beast over the weekend, if the forecast snow holds off.

I'll continue to follow the gentle running in procedure and look forward to even better fuel economy & performance. I'll give you an update & hopefully some pics later.

Cheers

Just

PS - Sandy tells me I am the only one to have ordered a 300c from him who hasn't changed their grille. Just a personal thing, I like the original, but the great thing about the 300c compared with so many other new cars is that you can totally personalise it, and choose your own preferred look!

Hi Just

That is the first 300C that I have seen in Midnight Blue potsed in Britain, it looks fastastic, especially with the rain/Scotch Mist beading away.

I'm with you on the grill, I think that the original grill looks tremendous. I opted for the mesh grill because I wanted to be different, but now that everyone seems to be opting for the mesh ones, it is you with the original fitting that will have the different looking car - saying that in 4000 miles of motoring, I'm still to see another on the road.

Have fun.

MTC

p.s. have you considered the patented MTC method of numberplate mounting to make your grill totally exposed ? It's only applicable to CRD owners, but then again, we are the chosen ones. To get the secret, all you have to do is answer the following question with at least 3 alternative answers.
Q. I love the English because .......................

I think i'll try this one!

1. Of their whole hearted attempt to promote cross border sportsmanship in a recent game of Rugby. Such was the feeling of warmth created by this friendly get together we haggis bashers have penned a small thank you. Appologies to the easily offended.

Ode to the English Rugby Team

Ye come up here tae paradise , tae beat us at your game,
Aw wind and p*ss and full o' sh*t, yer a' the bl**dy same.

Ye caw yersels World champions, the nations most elite,
But
Scotland are the greatest noo, cos yuv just been f*ckin 'beat.

A game that
wis invented, fur English gentlemen,
No Highland Jocks wie tartan frocks, well bl**dy think again.

A baw that's shapit like an egg, it's jist a stupit farce,
Bit ah suppose it makes it easier, tae ram right up yer a*se.

So git back home an lick yer wounds, yer a buch o stupit fools,
It's time fur you tae cheat again, and change the f*ckin rules.

Rugby, fitba, cricket tae, yer jist a shower o chancers,
Stick tae whit ye dae the best, you Morris f*ckin dancers!!!

2. They never give up in their attempts to pronounce Loch!

When god was creating the earth he said to St. Peter when i create Scotland i'm going to break the mold!

I'm going to make their countryside the most striking the world over, Their rivers clean and pure and the soil perfect for farming. Their air will be fresh, the sea beds full of oil and their produce renowned in every land! They will have a temperate climate (???), no earth quakes or famine and they shall want for nothing.

St. Peter said, " Hold on a secong lord, don't you think you're spoiling them?" To which god replied, "wait 'til you see the neighbours they're getting!"

3. Of their futile attempts to point out that we tend to go on about a sporting victory. The world cup was 40 years ago! Get over it!

Hi Belmont

I love the rhyme. Is it your creation, or one that is doing the rounds ?

Sadly, I don't think that any of your answers fall under the category of "I love the English because", so I'm afraid I'm going to have to disqualify you (& take all the North Sea Oil while I'm at it).

Perhaps saying love the English was to challenging. Mabye.
