BP Ultimate Diesel, worth the extra £'s ?

I have no definite views on this one and I was wondering if anyone else in Forumland could offer an opinion or some anecdotal evidence.

I stuplidly stopped at the wrong diesl pump today and filled Arnie up with 69 lt of BP Ultimate Diesel, the cashier could sense the state of shock that I was in when I signed the chitty for £70.31 ($123.00), but explained that even though it seemed expensive (there was no "seemed" at all in my eyes), it was actually a much better fuel, my engine would run smoother, it would develope maore power and I could expect an extra 30 (or so) miles from a tankfull.

I bit my lip before calling her a BS merchant because I realised that it could all be in fact true.

So my question is :- Is BP Ultimate Diesel worth the extra £'s or is it just a load of old tripe they are telling me.

Oh bugger.

I was hoping that someone else might have poured extra £'s of BP Ultimate into their car to save me the experiment.

So it looks like I'm going to have to change my name to Murphy The Guinea Pig

I believe the jury is still out on that one. There are some differences that could benefit a highly modern engine and some additives could help keep the engine clean (thus run cleaner and leaner) but all I read about it was marginal. For starters the power output of our kind of cars is not determined by the fuel, but by the programming of the controller.

I always go for the cheapest I can find.

so far the only info that I have been able to find has been on www.honestjohn.co.uk (an absolutely massive motoring forum in Britain) and this is what they said.

Which are currently the best fuels. And where can I buy fuel cheapest?

Feedback is that BP Ultimate diesel is the best diesel giving smoother running, more power and better economy to justify its higher price. Greenergy City Diesel sold by some supermarkets has the necessary lubricity.

But I was really looking for some firsthand knowledge.

Dear MTC
It look to me that Mr B.P. has worked out that the if you get an extra 30 miles per tank ie 6% the mr B.P. will get an extra 6% on the price.
I must say that on my old car (Mercades) I used shell optimax and the car s performance was greatly improved and the engine ran smother and with less revs and strain at high speed.
To me the car should have nothink but the best put in the tank and in the long tearm that will pay off
Do not buy super market fuel for a quality car as the octaine levels are lower than normal why do you think its cheep

Hi Murph,

Check out this website for diesel at 95p/litre:
http://www.sundancerenewables.org.uk.../bd%20info.htm

This place is pretty close to me. What they don't say on their website is that their renewable biodiesel is actually made by them completely legally (they pay the duty on it) from old chip shop oil! They deliver it to your house in drums or you can get it from their pump.

They started the business after realising there was a demand. Another local town had hit the national news when their Tesco store noticed a sudden mega increase in the quantity of their "value" cooking oil being sold. The locals were mixing it with alchohol or a thinner of some sort and putting it in their old diesel Ford Escort vans.

Not sure about putting it in a 300C however!
