Talking My latest trip darn sssssaaaaarrrrrrffffff

Arnie & I yesterday did a 526 mile round trip darrrrnnnn sarf and I got 41 MPG. (confirmed with refuelling calculation) - which showed that If I'd carried on I would have got over 700 miles from a single tank.

It wasn't an economy run - it was a motorway trip keeping up with traffic at a steady / continuous 72-76 mph.

If I hadn't been snarled up in the remnents of an accident for an hour/10 miles it would have passed 42 MPG.

It silent, roomy, luxury - I love it.

42 mpg is v. impressive MTC - in fact it's amazing given that Chrysler quote 42 for highway driving, and that manufacturer's mpg figures are invariably v. optimistic, and usually only achievable by doing a steady 55mph. Took my crd touring on the motorway for the first time yesterday afternoon: just junction 1-5 of the M1 and back again for no good reason other than I've been stuck with town driving eversince I picked her up last Monday. Got 32mpg travelling at the speed limit (okay, maybe a bit higher!). Quite pleased with that, given I've only done 240 miles and the engine's still 'tight'....best. John W.

I've found (& I hope that you will as well) that keeping at a steady speed is a much, much more economic way of making progress than upto 85 mph, down to 65mph, back upto 85 mph. It's just that motorway traffic doesn't usually let us cruise at a constant speed for a reasonable ditance.

Hi MTC,
Yes, your definitely right about a steady speed (even if it's pretty high) being more economical than up-and-down-up-and-down. For the time being, however, I'm running her in: ie. driving her pretty gently most of the time, and then injecting the odd 3000rpm burst.
On the subject of mpg, I've come across a thread (to which you have contributed), in which the mpg on the EVIC is measured in US gallons (possibly depending on date of manufacture). My EVIC gives me a choice of US or litres, and I was wondering if the choice on UK models should read IMP (ie. Imperial) or litres. My owner's manual still hasn't arrived (surprise, surprise!), so I can't look it up. Any insight much appreciated...best. John W

Hi John

The evic does only talk to you in US or litres, but if your evic computer is uptodate, selecting US will give you the figure in Imp gals rather that tiddly US ones.
To check the version of your evic, do the following
There are 7 pages of additional EVIC data you can access by pressing mode (music note) and compass on the steering wheel simultaneously for about 10 seconds. Use the leftmost Up/Dn arrows to scroll through the pages.
using the up/down arrow scroll through until you find the screen that tells you the CCN (evic) version.

If your version is 4.08 or later, you are on imp measurements, if its on 4.07 or earlier you are on American.

Hope I've helped.

...if it's of any interest, my version is 4.12 (and appears to be dated 27th February 06, so she is reading imperial rather than US and crikey, there's a small parallel universe in that EVIC....short run on the motorway this afternoon, re-set the mpg on the slip road on, set it to 70 on cruise control asap, and had averaged just over 44mpg approx. 15 miles later on the slip road off....yeehah!...thanks MTC....John W

Hi John

I think that 4.12 stes the all comers evic record - the previous best being 4.11 (I think) so that's as up to date as it gets.

One of my favourite settings on the EVIC easter egg is the % of accelerator pressure - once your car is fully run in, see how long you can keep the pedal at 100% - be warned though, it's great fun and you head towards a driving ban rather quickly.

...once she's run in I'm definitely going to try 100% on the pedal for as long as possible. In and around north London I reckon I should be able to sustain that for – and I'm being optimistic here – about half a second before I slam into the back of someone. John W.
ps. just clocked some good pics of your saloon on another thread: simply, looks fantastic

Thanks for the your nice comments about Arnie.

Regarding your 100% throttle dilemma, may I point you in the direction of the M6 Toll Road, Toll booths. Turn up, pay your £3.50, barrier up, roll forward, check left, check right, find someone else who wants to play the game & floor it. 100% Wide Open Throttle until the filters return you back to 3 lanes (by which time you are going a lot quicker than you should be).

MTC

p.s. if you're looking for a nice place to take your car out for a run - The Lake District is very nice this time of year. & contains a Chrysler dealer that actually cares about giving good service.
