Oil Pressure Question (CRD).

According to the owners manual, one chime should be heard when initially turning on the ignition. Mine doesn't (I have the seat belt buckled). Also when I bring up all digital read outs from the instruments, the oil pressure icon that reads 700kPa has a sliding scale straight to 750kPa when start up. The other pressure indicator in the digital read out section reads 115psi and never alters, whether hot, cold or initial start up. The standard oil can icon on the dash lights up (no chime) when ignition is initially turned on and goes out before the engine actually starts. How is all this possible?

G'Day "Kelvin", there are so many chimes going off when I insert the key and turn to the starting position (got to wait for the coil light to go out before crankling the engine). Never can tell what those chimes are telling me, could be my seat belt, (have to wait for the seat to move forward before clip on the belt), could be the driver door was still opened,(sometime I insert the key before shutting the driver door) could be the foot brake was on, could be the passenger doors were still opened (wife need to buckle the child seat at the back) All the icons are light up on the instrument panel, then goes off one by one, I think the computer is checking every items before I can start up. The little oil can light is always on when key is insert and turn to the start position but goes off soon enough before I actually crank the engine. Have no idea what those oil pressure figures meant. Don't really want to know as it is getting too technical for me.- sorry can't help you there.

BTW, fancy coming up to Canberra on the 23rd?

I get the same on the EVIC, 114psi all the time when running, 0 psi, when not, nothing ever in between. It would be interesting to put a manual presure gauge on to see what it was?

My guess is that there isn't actually a linear pressure gauge, just a spring-loaded switch which measures either zero or when a set threshold is exceeded. When this threshold is exceeded, then 115psi is displayed. The "oil-can" symbol may be just checking circuit continuity and doesn't need the engine running. Sometimes, computerised readouts can be quite dumb, whilst giving the appearance of being very smart.
