Alloy wheel peeling laquer

I was stunned and amazed that when I was using what is really an old pressdure washer with a wide spray pattern I stripped off a section of laquer from one of my alloys a piece the size of the palm of my hand from the silver then laquer section and into the inside of the rim all lifted.

I am aware of a corrosion issue with the split five spoke UK design alloy and will inform Hartleys plus wait till the other three go then get a new set under warranty.

Derek

Just watch out when they balance the new wheels, the replacements seem to me to be "refurbished" - powder coated I think, rather than the original finish which was polished & lacquered, you used to see the polished bit, especially at the edge of the rim.

They don't look bad and may last longer, it's just that I don't regard them as flawless, and like I have posted previously, they took 3 times to get the balance right. One of the wheels now has a large number of balance weights on it. Also when I removed the wheels to polish the insides with "Poorboy's World" wheel sealant , some of the coating on the hollow inside of the spokes was already flaking off!

I presume that your eventual replacements will be of the same type as per those fitted on the 2008 facelift model which hopefully will resolve any future similar problems.

I wouldn't bet on it! They would probably only replace like with like - and there's plenty of old wheels to be refurbished.

Did it started peeling from the center? Do you have any pics?

I have already taken off the rear wheels cause rusty watter was starting to show from the center cap, I removed the wheel cleaned and polished the center hub and then greased it well with cooper grease. No signs of laquer peel yet...

It started from the large silver insert area extending up the side of the spoke and into the inner section inside the rim, and sorry I didn't take a picture, I will next wash I do.
