Strange but true

My trip to work yesterday was done at a balmy -7degC, and for once, I took it really easy, with my speedo never rising over 60mph.
I'd been into the evic the night before and I'd left it on 'engine temp', now heres the curious/interesting/sad bit for you --- in my 13 mile drive to work, the engine never got to 'full' operating temperature. It peaked at 165degF and that was it.

Just in case anyone wonders why their MPG is currently so poor.

Funny you should say that, it's been minus 2-5, for the last couple of days now, so reset my MPG, on Mon morning Avg MPG 22.8 after 3 days

Here in Canada with my deisel pick up truck I drop a sheet of card board in front of the rad otherwise the operating temp would never be reached. This works in extreme conditions ie. 6 weeks with -20c.

Years ago, a popular accessory was a remotely operated radiator blind for such conditions. The blind coverage could be varied to achieve optimum temperature. I can also remember similar devices fitted to taxis; these usually had a couple of flaps which could be held open by press-studs to vary the amount of radiator exposure. Do such devices still exist in N. America, where I would imagine they could be very useful?

I've just thought of a brilliant idea for an aftermarket grille: The Venetian Blind grille!

Not that I've seen. During winter large tractors ( lorries) often have Bras ( vinyl) that can be partial opened and closed with snaps.
