Obviously things have got to a head and one thing I can be sure of is that we are all adults and we can come to a real solution.
Its fairly obvious that some threads have deviated and the Moderators have very kindly given us this place to rant, so this should keep all happy, those who want to post purely about our cars, problems enhancements modifications etc.... can do so in the normal forum, for a bit of banter we come onto the BS part, this to me is a no brainer.
John who I have great respect for has taken the uneviable task of moderating us lot and I feel we should respect this and dont make his job difficult.
I for one dont like being told what I can and cant do , but if you enter into an agreement (Forum membership) we must abide by the rules and enjoy what we have and respect others.

what Stig says, there's banter and then there's bollocks and thats where its starting to go....all to bollocks.....

We have 2 sections.. a Car only section, and recently, an off topic section.
So OK, in the past.. we went off topic in the car section, and no doubt we still will do, occaionally.
It's really simple.. stick to car related stuff in the car section, and lets have anything goes (within reason) in the off toipc section.
If someone wants to raise a thread " My cat did a whoopsie" in the off topic section... where's the problem.?
We have to remember... "the "Off Topic" section is still in it's infancy.. we still have to get used to using it.
Why make all this fuss over something so trivial.

I think you'll find for the most part we've left the Off Topic area alone. That sub-forum was created to hopefully allow you a place where you could have other discussions not related to the 300. It was meant as a means to separate these discussions from the 300 enthusiast area.
That's not the problem. Keeping threads ON topic (for the most part) in the main Euro/UK section is where the problem is coming from. You don't have the many different forums the main board has, so it's appropriate to have topics from brakes to lighting to detailing and everything in between. Yes, the polish thread was in this area and unfortunately it degenerated into dog cages and other car makes. That's just the last example of many, many threads that have gone astray lately.

You all seem to forget that the off topic page has to be moderated the same as any other page and John is our moderator. I think it is asking rather too much of anyone to read the utter tosh that is being written on a daily basis, every day, to ensure that someone hasn't gone over the score. As John said, the use of the forum does require some self-discipline and that has been sadly lacking by quite a few of late.
I also read in John's posting that he accepted that all of us were or could be guilty of posting off topic and admitted that he had done so as well. I don't feel there is any attempt to pick on a particular group of people. In point of fact I understand John is a retired cop so I very much doubt he was getting at anyone because they are a police officer. His comments were fairly obviously directed at the way the forum has gone in the last month or two and I do think we would be better exercising self moderation and having John to assist us rather than continue with the heavier handed moderation from overseas.

errr.... sorry, youre jumping to conclususions, which isnt helpful- I didnt indicate in any way that John was responsible for this- in fact my post included several sources, which was the point I was making. I apologise for correcting you in this, but its important that you, and others are aware this wasnt singling out individuals, but aimed at everyone. I agree, however, that John may find moderating the trash a step beyond the pale, & that self discipline is neccessary

That was well understood Bill in the first instance.
No need to justify.
