In 1981, CB radio was legalised in the UK, and although I was only 12, I desperately wanted one. The craze was so popular, shops sprung up dedicated to the kit, and I would cycle to one nearby and imagine I had a "rig" on my Chopper (oi, no, it was a bicycle, made by Raleigh!).
Unfortunately, my paper-round didn't extend to the cost of a CB setup, which was a lot of money in those days. By the time I went through motorbikes and then got a car, the craze had dwindled, and I never did become a "breaker".
Fast forward 28 years, and as I have mentioned elsewhere, one of my other vehicles is a Land Rover Defender, which I am busily kitting out for a bit more adventurous off-roading this year, as the club I belong to has its own extensive off road site, and I'd also like to do some greenlaning. Guess what - CB is alive and well, and used by Landy owners off-road! So, I've needed no more of an excuse, and bought the most retro looking modern one I could find, plus a great big whip aerial! CB Radios - Vehicle - - : President Walker -
I am so excited, I will soon be living out my Dukes of Hazard fantasies, (and no, I'm not talking about Daisy Duke in her hot pants, that was another "fantasy" when I was 12!) and I can't wait to talk to all my "good buddies" - 10-4. Anyone got any CB anecdotes, or am I the only saddo?
Thinking about making it easily transferrable from car to car... the 300C would look great with a Mag-Mounted 10 foot antenna on the boot!

I was on the CB before it was legalised (Ive already been done on the wireless telegraphy act once Im chancing it again here) When it became legal I did use FM for a while but it was no where near the same.

If you can keep your head while all about you are losing theirs, you probably haven't grasped the seriousness of the situation!
I may have started with CB's in the lates 1970's when they were on AM and illegal. (get out clause...may) My handle at the time would have been "Commercial Lad" (apprentice commercial mechanic), (if I'd had one of course).
When they went legal in the 80's I took up the handle "Filthy Animal", which was the Nickname Used by Phil Taylor from Motorhead.. and nothing to do with perversion.
At the time, CB was over populated, you struggled to find an empty channel, however, I stumbled upon a hack which gave an additional 2 channels.. channels 41 and 42, we used to call them.. I modified a number of transmitters to take advantage of this..
There were always the ones who wanted to spoil things.. mike keying over the top of you, so a little game we'd play... if we got a mike keyer, we'd jump to a legitimate channel, until he found us, then jump again to another.. when he found us the 3rd time, we'd say "Take it to the top", at which point we were out of reach of everybody....
LOL

El Cheapo Mod... home painted silver valve covers.. (it's a Yorkshire thing) Crimp Terminals
I had one on my Suzuki GS250T when I lived in Kent and at night we could talk to people in Holland because of the weird atmospheric conditions......
Oh takes me back to being 17....
Cheers

Not sure they do handles anymore... which is probably a good thing with my imagination (i.e. my username on here!) - if pushed I guess it would have to be something like "Klunky Man" - on account of my clumsiness, Mr Klunky being a nickname since I was a teenager...
was the Suzuki GS250T a burgundy one with the gold pinstriping - class! Where on earth did a CB fit on that! lol
That was the problem "Filthy Lad" - once it was legalised it was open season for the numpties! Now you don't even need a license, but from what I've read you'll struggle to find anyone to talk to apart from the organisations I've mentioned like off-road clubs - Guess some truckers still use Channel 19, I'm near the main drag to Felixstowe, so guess I'll find out when it arrives and gets fitted. Over and out. lol
