I want to paint my grill - advice please

I just got a take off grill from my dealer. I want to paint the upright spars on the grill in black. But, it has a chrome satin finish. I don't know what I will need to do to prep that finish for paint so that it it is securely bonded to the grill.

Any help would be appreciated.

simply...

my son says clean it thoroughly, prime it and paint it. They do that all the time at his shop. They are a grill Manufacturer.

They only charge like 50 bucks or so to paint it. May want to check with a pro painter in your area.

Did the masking tape protect the wing? I would have thought that the media would have eaten through the masking tape and damaged the wing. How can you protect the edges of the wing?

I've done it twice. Totaly easy Primer is the key. You could even use Kylons new plastic paint. They have satin colors now.

Since it is the front grille and will be subject to road debris and rocks that chip painted surfaces, etc. Take it to your profressional painter. I have known my paint/body guy for some time now. He even let's me tape off all, so I can save a few bucks. He will do the surface prep, anything chrome (shiny) gets an acid scrub to help primer stick. The other non-shiny surface to paint gets a light wet sanding (again for the primer). He has been painting for over 40 years, I let him put the right amount of Flex Agent, in the piant mixture, I have no idea of the right amount to mix in. Since the paint and clear coat is very thin on car finishes (think a piece of tin foil), flexing agent helps put a layer of "flex/give" to your paints surface. Your painted surface is still not bullet proof from debris/stones chip etc. It wil help minimize the chip/hole size to a pin hole instead of a larger, more visible, chip/hole. After a few years, depending on your daily use, I have my paint guy re-prep my front grille and re-shoot it. With the flexing agent added in, this will keep you on the road more and in the paint shop less. Just my .02
