Window tinting and GPS

I recently went to get a quote on all around window tinting and was told I would need special tint on the rear window for two reasons:
1. Radio reception would go down. (don't care, got sirius)
2. The metalized film tint would also block out signals to the GPS receiver located on the rear deck.

I was told I needed to either get ceramic tint (which doesn't come in limo ) or get the dyed tint (the cheap stuff that turns purple).

Does anyone have a factory GPS with their windows tinted with metalized tint?
Or has anyone tried and found out they lost GPS reception?

This guy wouldn't lie to me to pitch me a higher priced product. Plus it's only about $65 difference in price.

True or myth?

First, the GPS pickup for your NAV is beneath your dashboard and with no tint on the windshield, it should be no prob at all. (at least it is on the 05 300C's!)

You said "all around" tinting. Windshield tinting is illegal in 50 states, but there are some on here that have done it. Maybe they can tell you from their experience.

I added the factory NAV/GPS myself (exactly the same as factory) and I have 35% metalized tint on 4 sides and rear window with no problem whatsoever.

You could always go with ceramic tint (costs a little more) and not worry at all whether you do the windshield or not!

I have metallic limo tint on all my windows ('cept the windshield of course)...does not interfere with GPS whatsoever.

however, i do think my FM reception has been diminished slightly, and AM radio stations no longer come in at all.

This is to do with the stereo antenna and not the GPS antenna. Like Jonbbas said a metallic tint will diminsh FM and destroy AM signals.

I have got to be the luckiest one...
no problem with AM or FM signals with my tint...
and as for the GPS - BS - wait there is a emoticon for that one...
let's raise the flag...
Either way, you can't go wrong...
as it really sets off the lines of the car...
Sincerely,

What price were you quoted for ceramic tint? You don't need limo. tint for quality cooling/fading protection unless you are just into it for the dark looks.

I got metallic tint on my 300C and on my Dad's SRT8; we both have sirius and he has GPS nav, and there was no effect on either. The FM reception was not diminished either, ONLY AM. We both have AM reception still but it has to be a strong station. So if AM is important to you then avoid metallic, but for everything else it's fine.
