A common misconception is that the grille feeds the cooling air to the engine.

In fact, the cooling air to modern engines/cars is admitted by the lower air ducts below the grille. So the grille can, in fact, be blocked totally and not harm the cooling IF the lower ducts remain open. Remember the '60's and '70's GM cars where NO Grilles were popular in most lines? Also the Japanese cars of the same era. My wife's 2001 Acura has NO grille at all, breathes only via the bottom ducts.

Grilles nowadays, are just ornamental.

Question

Ok, if that was the case why didn't DC block the the whole grill hole, less drag and better mileage?

You're speaking to the wrong choir; ask DC.

Just a WAG on my part -- grilles are "in" right now. And the need for a massive one was called for in the design of this very aggressive-appearing auto.

Think about what you said - would you have bought your "C" if it had no grille at all a la the cars of the '70's??
