Windshield Repair or Windshield replacement (HELP !!!)

While driving to work this morning a rock hit my windshield and left a 1" chip in it. I found a place that does windshield repairs and wanted to get some feedback from the rest of you on this. Does anybody have and advice or stories to share before I do this? I also found a place that said they would replace the windshield for $160.00 which seems a little cheap to me.

If you can get a chip repair place, then I would get them to do it. It's cheap and most times you really can't see the fix.

I had it done a few times to my 98 Intrepid ES which was a lease and never had a problem when I returned it. I'm glad I didn't have to replace that cab forward windshield because it was bloody expensive.

We have had several chips and cracks repaired over the past few years. All were basically invisible after the repair. If it can be repaired that is the best situation. If it breaks or begins to run then have the windshield replaced.
Most repairs are done 'free' to you as your insurance would also prefer to repair the windshield rather than replace it.

Repair it first - no question. There is no seal like the factory seal. If you are not happy after the repair, then check into replacement.

If replacement is needed - DEMAND OEM glass - I would take it to the dealer, and before a new one is installed, I would inspect it to make sure it's OEM, not just a cheap replacement (this glass is supposed the be 25% thicker?, so I would not settle for any less than factory glass).

Excellent advice 5point7 regarding the replacement caution! I have had several repairs over the years as well, even as large as the one you describe, with no ill effects... if they say it can be done, it's definitely the way to go.
