Painting tips?

DIY painting tips. Hello everyone I am going to attempt to paint myself up a nice ol OEM grill brilliant black except for the wing and logo. Are there any tips out there or threads I should know of where I can get good tips on painting it? Ive read rjkuss's thread which was a GREAT write up but I want to make sure I do a good job on the paint. now I know you need to get a 400 grit sand paper and mask off the logo or whatever you don't want painted. after that you put some kind of primer so the paint stays on..

What I was wondering was if :there is a certain number of coats you are supposed to put of primer, color, and clear coat? or just put how ever many you want?

also, Is there a way to get access to get a perfect match of brilliant black? or do I have to go to the dealership to get it painted and clear coated?

thank you!

also be sure to sand the chrome good cause its hard to get paint to stick to it. When i had mine painted the guy said if road debris hits it its gonna chip. My answer to him was if road debris or rocks hit the front its gonna chip nomatter if its on painted chrome or not. Mine has been painted for a month and i do alot id Hwy mile and no chips yet.

I agree with the above posts, especially to sand the chrome to ensure paint adheres properly.

Hey... no worries. I copied the idea when i saw it. Lets see some pics when you do. I call it the "Executive Edition" cause you just look like the Boss when you roll up with the black grille.

Well i had a bodyshop do mine and the mix there own paint exact match. I would think you'd need a 12oz just to be safe and also you realize there are other items you might want to paint (ex. the plastic inserts around the fogs). But be sure to get a good bit of clear cause you'll want to do a few coats like 3 to 5. If you want to do what i did get an estimate from a bodyshop while letting them know you'll do all the prep work, ie sand and mask off the wing. I was only charged $45.
