New Kid With Questions About Tinted Tails

Hey everyone, so I was just wondering, I have been looking into tinted tails and I want to get a pair, but I don’t know how dark you can go without getting a ticket. I want to go dark color match to my black cherry paint on my 300, but I don’t know how dark you can go without getting a ticket.

Does anyone know?

I think that depends on your state's laws. I believe in OH, where I live, there is no legal limit of darkness - only that the lights (when on) and reflectors (when reflecting) must be visible.

Check your driving laws for your personal state.

This is the answer

Question: Is having smoked tail light/brake covers legal in Michigan? How about the smoked ones with slashes or vents in them showing a small part of the original red lens?

Answer: MCL 257.686 requires a tail lamp to emit a red light plainly visible for at least 500 feet to the rear of the vehicle.
MCL 257.697 requires stop lamps to emit a red or amber light and be capable of being seen and distinguished from other lamps for a distance of 100 feet, including during normal daylight.
If the cover you apply prohibits the lamp from meeting these requirements then it is unlawful.

There you go! Answered your own question.

Sounds like you are pretty safe to run with the idea IMO. "Plainly visible" and "capable of being seen and distinguished" certainly create some gray area to work with.

I can see it now.... "So Mr. Officer, are you telling me that you can't see those lights from here??? Come on!"

Pfft, no. I'm going with a darker tint in summer. The rule is as much as you can get away with. Rim size, tire size, tint, headlights, tail lights, money, girls, etc.
Always as much as you can get away with it.

Tint them yourself, and as suggested above, leave the critical light entrance/emission areas untinted. Here's mine on brilliant black:

No problems with the police.

That's two coats of VHT Nightshade tint. It leaves some of the red still show through in strong light. I think it would look great with your black cherry paint

This may sound dumb, but how did you tint them yourself? I have never tinted tails or anything

Buy spray tint (about $15), masking tape (about $3), and a newspaper (about 1$), remove the taillight assemblies from the car, mask and paper areas that are NOT be tinted, apply tint spray, let dry, remove masking tape and paper, re-install taillight assembies on car. Done.

Or take your car, or its taillight assemblies, to a shop that can do it for you, and then just write them a check.

Check out VHT Nite Shades for a DIY tint job. Search the forums to see some other examples of people doing this themselves.

BTW, nice work DESIREE.
