Great info man. This is one option I'm definetly getting (Sound Group II with Nav).

One question, does the Nav system come on if the key is turned to ACC? I go to the drive-in theatre a lot, and keep the key on ACC so I can hear the movie over the car stereo, and am hoping the Nav screen doesn't come on, or can be turned way down so it's not bright.

Wow a drive in. Those are rare in these parts. You're going to have to dim the unit the darkest you can using the Dimming attenuator next to your headlight switch. Unfortunately the screen will be on as long as it is in FM mode. Perhaps cut out some black poster board to fit the screen to keep in the glovebox for the drive in?

A piece of black felt would work - roll up easily and no risk of scratching the screen.

I miss drive-ins, definitely a symbol of a by-gone era here in California!

Yea, thats one good thing about living in a small town in the midwest....it may only be 1963 here, but thats not necessarily a BAD thing.

Thanks for the tip on felt, sounds like the way to go for me.

Didn't order nav & trying to make up for it.

Rather than retrofitting the factory nav into my C, I am considering a portable Garmin 2620. I like the idea of portability. I'm not impressed with the screen size (I'm pretty sure its right at 3.75"). It seems to be loaded with features. Anybody used one?

Frank....

Prior to buying my C-AWD (with Nav), I had a Garmin StreetPilot and a StreetPilotIII. The difference is generational. The SP was a simple black and white and the SPIII is colour with routing and voice capabilities. For all intents and purposes the 2620 is yet 2 generations newer than the SPIII.

The screen of the 2620 is slightly smaller than the SPIII.....and MUCH smaller than the Chrysler nav system. But, you will get used to the available screen size quicker than you think.

I have not had a lot of opportunity to play with the Chrysler Nav as yet. However, I can compare the two fairly well. As for accuracy....it is pretty much a wash. Both are the same...within reason, anyway.

One of the thngs I immediately missed when I moved to the ChryslerNav was the Garmin's page of statistical information such as present speed, average speed, average total speed, time since start, time not in motion, etc. This is handier than you might think. I was surprised to find it missing from ChryslerNav.

Another plus to the Garmin units, for those like me who tend to the techie/geeky sides of things, is the Garmin page of present satellite information. It shows which birds are presently in the LOS, which ones the system has locked to, the relative position of all presently viewable birds, strength of signal, present level of positional accuracy, etc. Also something I was surprised to find MIA in ChryslerNav.

The Garmin units have the ability to lock up to 12 birds simultaneously. I believe the ChryslerNav system is only capable of either 8 or 10 (manual is not in front of me at present.) I suspect that theprice paid for this may be 3 or 4 feet in positional accuracy. In other words.....we are talking about noise-level differences.

Now...are all of the above items significant??? In the grand scheme of things....no, not really. But, are they important to you? Well, that is a question that only you can answer. I've no doubt that, after a period of adjustment, I will not miss the Garmin units.

The Garmin units will need to be strung out each time you wish to use them. The ChryslerNav is always there and ready to go. A plus for Chrysler.

The Chrysler system has its brains on an internal DVD. The Garmin units, depending upon which ones, require downloading from a mapping CD to a memory chip. This chip wont come close to holding the entire country as the DVD does. However, I understand that the 2620 may have solved this problem. Tentative point to Chrysler here.

Bottom line. Each have their pluses and minuses. There is no right and wrong to it. Myself, when the dust settles, I will probably be quite happy with the Chrysler system and may only dig out the Garmin from time to time to test the continued accuracy of the vehicle speedometer. Otherwise, I suspect it will gather dust in the drawer here next to me.

Keep us up to date on which way you decide to go.
