Came back from vacation yesterday and started the car up after letting it sit for a week. Everything seemed fine at first, but after turning the car off and back on again the central display panel doesn't turn on. No Chrysler logo appears, just stays black.
There are some CDs in the CD changer and they do play when I turn the system on. I can even use the controls to switch between them. I can also change the volume. But that's it. Neither the buttons on the control panel nor the ones on the steering wheel will let me switch to Radio or Navigation (as far as I can tell, at least -- the display is totally dark), nor can I switch tracks on the CD that is playing.
It may or may not be relevant, but my battery died just before I left on vacation and I had a new one installed.
Any thoughts? I'm thinking it might be a fuse (according to the owner's manual, fuse #36 in the Rear Power Distribution Center controls "Hands Free Phone - if equipped/Media System Monitor DVD - if equipped/ Radio/Satellite Receiver - if equipped"), but I don't even know how to tell if a fuse is blown or not.
I can't imagine that there would be more than one fuse for the radio (allowing some functions to operate and others not) - but who knows, there are a lot of electronics on this car! You can usually tell with a visual inspection if the fuse is blown. Pull the fuse out of the fuse box and see if the metal that runs through it is intact - if it is split in the middle - it's definitely blown. The fuses are translucent, so you can see the metal inside the fuse. If it doesn't appear to be blown, I'd still replace it to see if that is the culprit. Hope that's all it is!
Thanks, RDT! I'll go pull the fuse and check it out as soon as I can. I guess my main question, though, was whether this even sounded like a problem that could be caused by a blown fuse in the first place.
I pulled the #36 fuse and visually inspected it. Looked good to me, but I went over to Radio Shack and bought a new one just in case. Swapped the fuse right there in the parking lot, and when I turned on the car the media center was completely dead. Then I thought to actually hit the power button... Success! Everything lit up and seemed to work just fine. Until I got home that is and tried turning the car off and back on again. Back to the way it was before -- no lights, most buttons don't work and the CD in the changer plays just fine.
I suppose it's possible I blew the new fuse again, but another visual inspection doesn't show any damage to the new fuse either.
Any suggestions would be welcome. Could it be another fuse (and if so, which one)? I see a lot of the fuses are described as having something to do with the "Front Control Module", but no details are provided.
Yeah, that sounds like a bit more than I'll be able to do on my own. No dealers near where I live, and my local mechanic is a whiz with brakes, mufflers and suspension but doesn't work on electrical systems. Just got back from vacation and can't take any more time off right now, either...
I'm having this SAME EXACT ISSUE. It'll come on once and a while but rarely. It finally popped on this morning long enough to let me take the Navigation DVD-ROM out. I've taken the unit out itself and messed with the connections but that didn't work. I've checked all fuses as you probably have. I came on here to post about the issue and hope for results until I found this thread. Lol. I've been looking at buying an entirely new unit of which the OEM unit will cost a hefty amount. Your best bet if not ever finding a solution to the problem is to grab a new one with some installation kits and hook it on up. Unfortunately, I think that IS the only solution. I'm going to try a few more ideas eventually but first I need to figure those ideas out. Lol. I'll let you know if I figure anything out. Please post if you come up with a fix as well.
Thanks.
You can't even get these repaired at the dealer shops. My REC/NAV stopped reading CD's in the truck and their only solution was to replace it. Lucky I had an extended warranty as a new REC/NAV unit was, at the time, over $2200 dealer retail.
I had this - see my thread, - Flat battery, now no nav. - Basically disconnected battery for 20 mins. I had previously been giving the car it's yearly valet and had music etc on for hours. Started in eve, but dead in the morning. Jumped it in the morning and nav was as you describe. I hope it works for you...
Thanks for the feedback, guys! Where is your thread, ianf?
I found an OEM replacement online for around $750, which is a lot but better than $2000+. I'll try disconnecting the battery first, however, and see what happens.
I disconnected the battery, waited 20 minutes and reconnected it. No change, except that it has now defaulted to AM radio instead of the CD player (which means I'm stuck listening to crappy talk radio instead of listening to music). Can't change modes, can't switch to navigation. The only things that work are the volume/power button and the buttons that switch between CDs or radio presets.
Just for giggles I tried pulling the fuse again and re-inserting it, but that did nothing.
Sorry to hear did not work for you... and made it worse! My thread is in European section. If you put Flat battery, now no nav into search on the forum you should find it.
Hope you can sort problem..
Ian
Check out the various Chrysler forums in the for sale sections. The 2005-2007 REC units are common across a few Chrysler lines. A direct plug in would come from a 300. They go for anywhere between 450 to 700.
I got a question about replacement - first the symptoms and what I tried
1. blank nav screen, nav dvd refuses to eject but I can load a CD
2. it's locked in AM and won't change
3. all the lights come on (knobs) etc
I've pulled the battery and waited probably a hour - no change
Pulled and replaced the mentioned fuse in the trunk - no change
Is there a NON-Nav radio that I can swap in? Yeah, I know I'll have to replace the face plate for one that is non-Nav but I've never really relied on the navigation; a dash mounted iphone takes care of that.
I need to replace it as part of trading in for a 2014 CPO model I'm fixing to buy.
