Just happened to me today. Don't really feel like shelling out $550 at the dealership to get it fixed. Exact same problem as the K39 recall but it doesn't apply to my vin. Any recommendations for what I should so at the dealership or anyone know of anyone in southern california (LA/OC) that will fix it for me on the cheap? TIA
It's really not hard to do, although if you're not mechanically inclined, then it may be better to get someone else to do it for you.
Skip the dealer, get the billet aluminum part, and have another garage do it for you. It shouldn't cost as much for an independent to do it as the dealer.
When I did mine, I recall 2 steps which were I had slight issues. I had a problem disengaging the shift cable, and I think part of the clip that held it in place broke. And although dismantling the shifter body wasn't too difficult, it probably the most work involved in the entire process. If you do choose to do it yourself, take extra care during those two steps.
Try it yourself based on the many examples in this forum or on youtube.com.
If it goes badly, have it towed to your local garage and ask them to finish it. If you tow it to the dealer, they will still charge you the $500+/- even if you started it yourself. Nothing to lose.
You can use the billet aluminum part OR just use the other improvised approach with the cotter pin.
Thanks for all the quick replies. It's at the dealership right now. I'm waiting to see if they will extend the K39 notice to my car. If not, I'll probably just make them give me my ride back an order the part online and have my mechanic do it. It's worth the 1-1.5 hrs of labor for me just so I don't F something up.
I was looking at this part on amazon. Looks like it's cast aluminum not billet but I don't think that make that much difference for a part of this kind. That and I'd be able to get it same day. Anyone see any problems with this replacement?
So the dealer is telling me it's not ONLY that plastic hook part but that the solenoid that allows it to shift out of park is what's broken as well and that it's integral to the shifter. Is he BSing me and it's really just the plastic part? I mean when I manually rotate the broken plastic lever, it shifts out of park.
That's what I figured... I told em just to give me my car back so I could get a second opinion and the service agent proceeded to lower and lower the price but still not to what it would cost me to just replace that crappy plastic part. Anyone know if those solenoids are available aftermarket in case it really is broken? I googled it but I didn't see a part specific to my ride.
