Transmission fluid warmup times
So, I have noticed over the last 4 months that my 8 speed transmission does not operate that smoothly in cold temperatures. This morning, I started my car in the garage (45 F ambient temps), and headed to the gym. This is about a 10 minute commute.
I observed coolant temps, oil temps, and transmission fluid temps while I drove, and noticed that while the coolant and oil temps warmed up relatively quickly, the transmission fluid was very slow to warm up. In fact, even after 10 minutes of driving (with oil and coolant in their sweet spot), the transmission fluid had only warmed up slightly, to about 90F. Not until another 15 minutes of driving, did my transmission temps hit the sweet spot.
The takeaway here is don't assume your transmission fluid/transmission are sufficiently warmed up just because your oil/coolant temps are. For whatever reason, which I'm sure some gearhead is about to explain, the transmission takes much longer to come up to an optimum operating temperature.
