i have a 2006 5.7 300c hemi. On starting the car I get a very loud lifter tick. Not Hemi Tick. LIFTER TICK. my pcm registers multiple cylinder misfire and cylinder 4 misfire. When this used to happen i would drive it for a while at high revs and the ticking would go and the car would run perfect and fast.
Earlier this week i noticed the tick turned into a tapping now and is very embarrasing to drive. It takes a lot longer to go away now and after i give it some high revs it mostly goes but the performance is not the same. Sometimes as im driving at full throttle the car is just not the right performance and then ALL the cylinders work for a brief moment and my back end tries to overtake me. Then it goes back to bad performance again.
I don't know what this is as sometimes when it is warmed up i pull over, clear pcm codes and the tapping goes away. I also noticed that when i return from a long journey and the car is not tapping anymore, i give it a rev as i turn the engine off. The next time i get in and turn it on it runs with no tapping for about 20 seconds and then the tapping comes back.
I have run the car for about 400 miles maximum like this.
I have cleaned my spark plugs (They looked fine, minimal oil on thread and none in plug holes) and checked and swapped the coil packs. The problem stays on the same cylinders. Whilst idling, the car doesn't change tone or drop if i remove packs 4, 6 and sometimes 7. When i rev in idle when the tapping has gone, it revs sweet and clean but when returned to idle you can hear bup bup bup bup and again the car doesnt drop when i remove coil 4 6 or 7. I left off coil 4 and revved and it is much rougher. So it seems at idle its missing but not when throttle is applied and missing again when accelerating.
I am using non mds lifters and mds plugs with no solenoids, so mds is not an issue ( unless the car is programmed to misfire if there is no mds equipment ).
Does this loud tapping mean I have destroyed my cam?
Can i continue to drive like this until i have the funds to, for the third time, pull the head and replace the lifters?
If it was mechanical, the tapping would never go away, right?
I can hear the injectors ticking quite loudly whilst in the car but that wont cause the metal on metal rocker cover TAPPING would it?
I hope i have given y'all enough detail and info for some help. Thanks.
