Clunking noise from rear of car while coasting

2006 300c AWD 40,000 miles

My wife calls me yesterday complaining of a noise in her car I put it on a lift and I did not see anything obvious with the driveline I was expecting a rubber coupling on the rear drive shaft to be worn out since this is a known issue but they look fine.

I ran it in gear on the lift and the noise was not heard. I took it for a test drive and these are my findings

It makes the noise on coast only and increases with speed "clunk clunk clunk"
when coasting when I hit the brakes the noise goes away completely

It sounds to me like it's coming from the rear axle I have not had a chance to have someone drive it while I sit in the back

Has anyone else experienced this? If so what was the issue?
