Replacing battery. What's really involved?

This will be my 6th winter with the 300C. I want to replace the original battery before it dies.

Batteries run from 152.00 to 189.00. Ouch!

Most sites I've been to state:

Battery Is Vented To Outside Of Vehicle
Installation May Take Up To 30 Minutes

What does that mean?
Is this a simple DIY R and R job, or does it involve special tools/equipment?
Never had a car where the battery had to be vented or where the replacement could take 30 minutes. 5 minutes max!

Who did this already? What do I do that's different from what I'm used to?

I did not find anything unusual or difficult when I replaced mine. I just removed the vent hose from the old battery (the battery has to be vented because it is located in the trunk), removed the mounting strap and removed both battery terminals. I also hooked up a trickle charger to the post under the hood, doing this saved me from resetting any electrical settings. Total replacement time was around 10-15 minutes. The cheapest battery at the moment is Sams Club 94R $109.76 and they will install it for you.

I agree with that. It didn't take long and I like the idea of the trickle charger!

Don't forget the trickle charger (or some other commercially available battery-powered device, or the like) to keep the computers energized if you have Sam's Club do the change. They may be savvy enough to know to do it.

If you do it yourself be prepared for a badly rusted battery hold down bolt that will snap off in the captive nut beneath the trunk floor and require twisting out the broken stud with a visegrip. Spray the dumb thing with WD40 or the like first! I didn't and it snapped before I knew what was happening!
This is what turns a 10 minute job into a 30 minute job:

I also changed mine recently due to the age factor, It's an easy 15 minute job.
I went for a Bosch S5 battery, it has a five year warranty, it was the best bsattery I could source locally.

My OEM battery still is in the car! 70,000 miles and six years. I will go back to Chrysler and get the exact same battery and I don't care if it does cost $200. That is the best unit I have ever owned.

With batteries, its just LUCK. Even cheap priced batteries can last for years after their life expectancy. You can buy the most expensive battery and it could crap out within a year. It just happens...

Just a word of caution if you hookup a trickle charger to the post under the hood; it's a good idea but if you do that, make absolutely sure that you keep the positive battery cable from contacting anything metal (especially the negative cable) while you're swapping the battery. If it does you could have a big expensive can of worms on your hands.

As far as which brand of battery, there are only a few manufacturers of batteries but lots of different brand names they are sold under. Napa and Interstate and Delco and many many others are made by Johnson Controls, and seem to hold up very well. I don't know who makes the MOPAR batteries; my original battery in my '05 300C had to be replaced under warranty in 2007, but the Mopar replacement the dealer installed then is still going strong. Likewise, the OEM battery in my '07 Ram only lasted 4 months, but the Mopar replacement is still fine. Neither of these vehicles sat on the lot before they were purchased so I'm thinking the Mopar replacement batteries are from a different manufacturer than the OE; they seem to be much better anyway.
