Hmmm, I've heard of pouring acetone into a diesel, didn't know about using it in a gasoline engine, but I suppose it's the same physics, and it works well for diesels.

Well, I also plan to stick with the 89 for my Hemi. The difference in price overall is not that big of a deal to me.

I mentioned previously in another thread about the great fuel mileage I received during a trip to Las Vegas. On the way back, I needed to get gas and stopped in Jean, NV. The station was out of 89 so I went with the 87. Surprisingly, no pinging at all. You won’t find too many places like l-15 with all the varied elevation changes in the hot, hot desert.

Unlike Phil, my mom lives at an even higher elevation in Temecula of almost 2,000 ft. and the car still ran the same as far as I could tell. Where I live in the San Joaquin Valley is mostly flat (around 500 ft. elev.) and I’m back to the 89.

Have you checked for codes, Mark? Something's not right there; your knock sensor should be retarding timing as nec. even if you did get a tank of bad fuel. Chrysler states that the LX-based Hemis will detune themselves as necessary to avoid detonation when using lesser grades of gasoline. That is obviously not happening with your car. She shouldn't ping.

I used 87 *exclusively* for the first 6,000 miles or so, with spirited mountain driving at elevations over 7,000", several speed limiter verifications, and recurring desert driving, with nary a ping. Only reason I went to 89 was to smooth out my idle, which occasionally got ragged with 87 octane. Went to 91 only because of the stage II jetchip. I'd have her checked out.

Diesel does not use octane, it uses cetane. The chain of molecules is completely different as is the basic makeup of the two fuels. The physics are not the same. You put acetone into Diesel to keep the paraphin base from thickening in colder temps so you can start your vehicle. Engine block heaters and modern reformulated winter diesel fuel usually preclude the need for this measure.
There is another thread on the boards about acetone in gas. Some intrepid members were going to try it. Never heard any WOW results, so acetone would appear not to be the panacea of choice.
A little bit of dry gas (ethyl alchohol) will encapsulate moister and help it burn more efficiently without being overfly explosive or scoreing the metal parts like acetone may do. It is an INDUSTRIAL SOLVENT, not a fuel additive.

Yes, no plan to use anything other than dry gas (worked great in my Alfa) or some Chevron or Castrol injector cleaner. Good point meister on codes, I'll check.

They just busted a couple of stations in Florida for "watering" down their gas.
Several people complained of excess pinging and hesitation while accelerating so thet started checking them out.
Can you believe they are sticking it to us AND cheating???

Damn, that's pretty busted. I bet they thought they could get away with it because of the EPA's loosening the quality requirements.

I’m with those sticking with the factory recommendations. Why jeopardize the engine or performance or idle smoothness for sixty bucks a year (600 gals @ .10 price differential)? Like the gas mileage discussions, if you needed more MPG, or need to use cheaper gas, you probably have not chosen wisely with a 340 HP Hemi.

If you want to use 87 try an octane booster additive see if that helps, or change your computer to run on 87. I used hypertec 111 programer to change my ram from 89 to 87 no problems at all.

You get 10 years in prison if you water down Vermont Maple Syrup and advertise it as pure or 100%.
