Looking at buying 2006 300 with 2.7L 130K

Hello All,

I am looking at a used 2006 300 base model with the 2.7 L with 130K. Car runs good and if I decide to buy, What do I need to check for. I assume a water pump and timing chain is a good place to start. Dies anybody else have recommendations or advice for this car and what can it cost to have these items replaced? I plan on bringing my code reader to check that all processes are complete for IML

Thanks
Chuck

The 2.7L has a bad reputation for engine sludge. Search it. Remember, the 300 with the 2.7L is a 4,000 lb. car powered by only 178 HP. If you are looking as far back as the '06 model year spend a little more and get the V-8 powered 300C. You will thank me later. The MPG is negligible. Good luck.

Hello Agroal,

I have a chevy avalanche and was looking for something more economical for road trips. Are the 2.7 L engine in a 2006 any better. than 98-2004? I assume if you perform routine maintenance on the newer motors there should not be a problem. Any if the car has cosmetic body damage and I found this on a used car lot / Chrysler dealer. He wanted 5900 but I can ge tit for 4500. Would this be a good deal or should I just take your advice and keep looking for a 5.7?

the v8's of the mid 70's put out 180-190 horses for the big boats. I am not looking for race night . The 1980's Monte SS was using a 305 5L HO engine that put out 195 *LOL*

Thanks
Chuck

Honestly, look for a car with at least the 3.5L V6 as the 2.7L is notorious for sludging and is very, very weak for a car that size.

And if you find one with 60K or more miles, you'll want to inspect the front end. The suspension and steering link bushes will probably need replacement.

Yeah, I was always surprised that they put a 2.7 in these heavy beasts. I was lucky enough to rent a 2.7 once when I was out of town for work... and I was shocked. The car just felt soooooo heavy. And to be honest, I felt like I was burning more gas because I had to make the motor work so hard to get the beast moving.

As maddog said, look for a 3.5 at least. They really aren't too bad at all. And you can still pep them up a bit if you want some more out of it. But the best answer is really the 5.7 believe it or not. Plenty of power for the heavy sled and the 5.7's have MDS - which allows the V8 to shut down to only 4 when the power isn't needed - such as highway cruising speed. I've found that the mpg difference in a 3.5 vs a 5.7 is minimal... depending how you drive it of course.

I would have to think that a 5.7L 300C with cylinder deactivation gets better mpg than the heavier Avalanche. My wife drives the 300 and is usually doesn't go too far. We have an '08 with only 48K miles on it. I estimate the MDS (4 cyl.) icon is on 95% of the time. Alll 8 cylinders come online when at idle (for smoothness) and under acceleration. Around town we see 16 mpg. Long trips on the highway go into the low 20's. A plus with the 5.7L is most options comes with them. Especially the AWD models. The 2.7s were mostly for fleet sales.

Hello All and thanks for the reply.

I was able to drive a 2007 with a 2.7 and a 300C with a 5.7 last night. the 5.7 feels like the right engine for this car. The 2.7 has to be driven like an old man but its ok .I need to look a the car tomorrow. I will inspect it carefully and if it looks like its decent, 4 K is not going to kill me. The main purpose is not everyday driving as I work from home but for long 700 mile road trips I take every 3 weeks across flat terrain. Again I will use your opinions when deciding. I am paying cash and with excellent credit, I dont want a car loan but maybe I will have to wait. What I really want is the new dodge Challenger 3.6 Rallye redline but that's another forum

Thanks
Chuck

130k on a 2.7... Use the dog years factor... 130k on any other engine is 130k... On the 2.7 it equals 910k... Trust me on this one

Re: Looking at buying 2006 300 with 2.7L 130K

I had an 06 300 with the 2.7L and it was so sloe and really didn't that good of MPG. The motor has to work so hard to just move the car and I averaged 18 MPG city and 24-27 hwy . I bought it with 62k and traded it in with 120k . Like everyone is suggesting get one with the 5.7L you'll be a lot happier with it. What's sad is that my 06 srt-8 300 gets 23 MPG on the hwy and is A LOT more fun to drive

It appears that the 5.7 liter with it's 340hp.and 390 lb/ft has lured in yet another fish! You won't regret buying the Hemi. (even though it's not really a Hemi). In reality it's a modern 350 ci. pushrod small block that's as refined as any European or Japanese DOHC luxury make. A fantastic small block V8 with close to 400 lb. of torque that is quiet and refined when cruising then it sounds like 1969 when you nail it.
