The infamous "stall after refueling" is finally getting attention from the US department of transportation and safety. If they get enough reports there is a good chance of having a recall issued. I know there are people on this forum that have paid $800+ to get this fixed as well a people who have had the problem but not yet shelled out the money. Submit your complaint at the URL link below. I have submitted one as well as I had this happen to me at Spring Fest in Irvine and I am not looking forward to having to buy a new gas tank.
NOTE: This applies to LX cars with 5.7 and 6.1 V8 engines only.
DETROIT -U.S. auto safety regulators are investigating complaints that the engines in three Chrysler models can stall without warning.
The probe covers more than 192,000 Chrysler 300C luxury cars, Dodge Charger muscle cars and Dodge Magnum wagons from the 2006 model year. The cars have 5.7-liter or 6.1-liter V-8 engines.
The agency says it has 54 complaints from owners that engines stalled while the cars were being driven. In all cases the stalling happened after the cars were refueled. Forty-eight of the owners said they had several stalling incidents, and seven said they had trouble restarting the cars.
The agency says the number of complaints has increased, with half coming in the last eight months.Investigators will check how often the problem happens and determine if a recall is needed.
Happens to mine every so often as well. I just deal with it or just not fill up all the way but will submit a complaint as well to help the process for the rest that have this issue.
It happened to me 3 times right after I purchased the car new in 2007. After the third time I researched the issue (right here on 3CF ) and have always admonished the fueling attendants (we can't pump our own gas here) to NOT "top it off". Since then, it's all good.
My '06 CSRT8 has never had this issue either?????? Infact this is the first I have heard of this on '06's........ Since my '04 SCREW, I never fuel beyond the auto shut-off of the pump. Apparently, there is some kind of sensor in the fords (roll over sensor???) that once they get fuel on them, they tend to shut off occasionally after refills. BS or not, was told by mechanic not to fill past auto shut off on Fords..... Maybe the same with Chry?
Now that I read this, I'll probably start having this issue lol. We'll see if a recall happens. There wasn't one for the Fords with their IAC valves. Damn cars would shut off when you took your foot off the gas. My new 2001 Mustang did it, my moms 03 Escape did it and my friends 02 Explorer did it. Stalling whilst driving is not fun, so I hope they do something about it.
Well lets hope it becomes a recall and can get repaired once and for all... I have been lucky so far (knock on wood) but figure it's only a matter of time before I forget, top off and stall out! Be nice to know it was no longer a worry when fueling!
I had this happen as well when I was turning into road on Tuesday took me about 5 minutes to get the car to start again held traffic and people were getting pissed but mine is a 07 300c.
This happens to me every time I fill up the take above 80%. It just stalls on me and occasionally will just burn the starter for a second or two before it turns back on. Mines an 05 300c.
Hi all - I'm new to the sight and a new owner of a 2006 300C. Glad to know that this is really a thing because I bought the car yesterday, filled it up this morning and it stalled out on me at a highway offramp. Took a few cranks until it fired up and then ran normally. I went to department of highway and motor vehicles website to register my VIN related to this issue but am glad to read all the good information that you have all shared.
This is caused by a float that expands and gets stuck in a vent line in the tank. The expansion is very very small, but is just enough that when the tank gets almost full it gets stuck not letting the tank vent as usual. It took me alot of time to get an answer on this but I was assured "off the record" that chrysler is being forced to fix this issue, but that they are dragging their feet on this. The current delay is for ramping up production of the newly designed tank. I was told that the offical recall should be in place by the second quarter of 2014. If you have this issue please report it. The more people that do will increase the pressure for the fix and resolution!!! :yell:

This is great to know if your source is reliable. I had to put gas in for the second time yesterday and made sure not to fill it up all the way and have had no problems. I imagine that I'll get better at this with time. I'm just so used to letting it go until the pump shuts off automatically that I will have to be vigilant.
What's funny is that by the time they do issue a service item and fix I will probably have a hard time switching back after :silly:
I have an '06 300c SRT8 and it's happened to me 3 times. each time in oregon (we are not allowed to pump our own gas and the attendants are NOT allowed to "top it off")
just when the pump auto stops at 'fill'. Each time it takes about 5 minutes to be back to normal.
I leave the key turned to ACC and stop just before Full mark. If I let the pump auto shut off it will die 2-3 times in about 8 blocks of driving. A big pain in the butt.:frown:
I have had this problem multiple times. Once was on an on ramp, when the car shut off I lost power steering and just about wrecked. Now I do not fill past 3/4 and have not had an issue. I had a hard time restarting the car a few times, but found I needed to turn the key all the way off, then restart. Fires right back up. Hope they do a recall soon, I don't like being nervous every time I put gas in it, worrying that I may have filled just a little too much.
What is it about the gas tanks on the big engine cars that have this problem and why does it not affect the 6 cylinder cars? Something different in the in tank pumps, or the return line?
As the tank is the same I would think that the issue is still there... If it doesn't happen in the 6's is be surprised... Who wants to overfill for a month or two and let us know!
Happens to me - every time. Regardless of initial fuel level, regardless of how much I put in or how slowly I pump it. This is a manufacturing safety defect.
Mine started the first time after I fueled up and now I can be going 65 down the express way or
5 miles on my street and it will shut off just like you turn the ignition switch to off.
I have had the pcm,tcm and many more modules replaced it will run perfect for days maybe weeks then for days
It will stall for no reason its very scary when coming home from work at 2am on the express
Way and it just quits I have no power steering or brakes and I have to getit off the road without anyone getting hurt
And now my dealer says it maybe a power module by the fuse box under the hood 700.00 bucks but he
Doesnt guarantee its what my problem is. I am soooooo frustrated and upset.
I love my
