Full Fuel Tank Stall - SOLVED

Has anybody's 5.7 or 6.1 stalled after filling the fuel tank? It happened to me many times before until I came across the band-aid fix of not filling my fuel tank all the way. Instead, I would fill it to 3/4. This prevented the dangerous stalling condition. Turns out it was a faulty valve in the fuel tank which some people had figured out. Myself and many others filed complaints with the NHTSA who finally did something about it. My lawyer was literally putting together a class-action lawsuit when I came across these articles today . . .

Chrysler Extends Fuel-Tank Warranty on 2006 V-8 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger and Magnum - KickingTires

For anyone who paid $1200 to get their fuel tank replaced, I'm sure you could use this to get your money back. Chrysler finally admits that the fuel tank valve is faulty and they are extending the fuel tank warranty to a lifetime provision.

Please spread the word about this.

I received a letter from Chrysler today regard this issue. I have never had the problem myself though. ('06 300c SRT8)

The letter states: "....the warranty period (3 years or 36,000 miles) on your vehicle's 19-gallon fuel tank has been extended to lifetime coverage.".
And, "...applies to select model year 2005-2006 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger, Dodge Magnum vehicles."

It then goes on to say if you experience the problem now or in the future to contact your dealer to have the repairs performed.

Additionally, there is an enclosed "Customer Reimbursement Claim Form" that can be returned to request a possible refund for any related repairs in the past.

"For any questions or concerns, contact your dealer or the Chrysler Customer Assistance Center at 1-800-CHRYSLER (247-9753) or 1-800-4-A-Dodge (423-6343)."

I'm not wholly convinced they should limit the lifetime fuel tank warranty to only those model years. I purchased a '13 S model in November, and coincidentally -- whether this was the proximate cause or not -- after I filled the tank for the first time, the next morning (on my short ride to my BART train for work) at maybe 20MPH, my car shuddered and sputtered to where I was almost certain it was going to die (it didn't). I don't know for sure if it was this same vapor problem as was reported here and in even earlier posts I've read on these forums, but those were the circumstances. I brought it to the dealer for a check and they found nothing and/or couldn't replicate it. It hasn't happened since.

I think I should be adding at the end of every post, "...this is why I'm buying an extended lifetime warranty [on month 11]."*

*Irrespective of the fact that I already realize this particular fuel tank extended warranty does not apply to my specific 2013 car.

I had my tank replaced 2 weeks ago.. Before these letters were hitting peoples mailboxes.. I had a hard time getting my dealer to acknowledge the fuel tank problem and warranty.. I ended up calling Chrysler, who confirmed my car fell under the warranty, had them call my dealer while I was on hold, and fill them in & schedule a day.
Needless to say, I never thought I would be so excited to fill my car completely.. Oh and I got a '14 Challenger rental for the day to boot!

Good luck everybody!

MacK
P.S. the defective tanks also were used in other LX models (and are covered).

I believe I have been having this issue recently. Did not really correlate to the fill-up but last time it happened was the red light right after the fill-up. Stalled and fluctuating idle. Will have to get a new tank I guess.

I got my letter yesterday and filed it with the rest of my vehicle's paper. I've not had the problem but then again most of the time I fill up, after the first click the nozzle is pulled.

Not sure if I have the faulty valve but I guess it won't hurt to have it checked.

From what I've read, it seems that the float part of the valve swells and stays open due to gasoline with a high ethanol content. I had the dealership give me my old tank so I could inspect and poke around at it. Sure enough, the valve is built into the tank. Cannot remove it without destroying the tank. Had they made the valve removable (like the twist lock cover to the fuel pump) this would have been an easy fix. Smh.

Just got my warranty letter in the mail today. So glad theyre gonna fix this. Been dealing with this issue for almost two years on my 2005. I knew you had to replace the whole tank as that valve is molded into it.
