Question HELP with filter removal

Hi guys, I am stuck and wanted to see if anyone had to deal with this already. Yesterday I did my first oil change and installed a fumoto oil drain valve on the beast. However, I cannot get the factory installed filter to release. I went through two filter wrenches and the sucker still will not budge. Obbviously the factory tightened the damn thing way too much. Only thing I can think of now is to take it to the dealer and have them replace it for me. Any ideas??? Thanks

What type of filter wrench do you have? The best kind are the 'end cap' type so you don't burn your hand, but some of the cheaper ones are plastic and will just slip if the filter is too tight. A good quality metal one should work fine. If not then the kind of filter wrench that has a metal band and a handle on it should work but you have to let the car cool down some because your hand may come in contact with the exhaust pipe using that kind (ask me how I know )

Are you sure you are turning it the right direction? I'm asking this in all seriousness because even though I'm sure you know which way to turn it (left is loose) sometimes when you are underneath the car and upside down on a creeper or whatever it's easy to get turned around. The factory filter on my "C" and my dad's SRT8 were both really tight but not really a problem to remove. Once you do get it to budge, MAKE SURE the gasket doesn't stay stuck to the sealing surface on the engine. If it does not come off with the filter reach up there a peel it off before you install your new filter or you will have a huge oil leak.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I did have a plastic end cap one that had a hole for a 3/8 inch wrench and a hex end for a socket. Could not get it to budge with that (stripped out that one). went to PepBoys and bought a metal one with a hole for the 3/8 inch drive. No good stripped out that one too. I think whoever installed this filter at the factory way overtightened the filter. I even put on rubber gloves and tried my darnest to turn it by hand. I had a good grip, but that puppy is in too tight

Thumbs up

Had the same problem, with first oil change.
I bought this, works great The harder you turn, the tighter the jaws grab.

Thanks GoldN! I went to Pepboys and bought the cheaper version to this one. I'll see how this works. Hey just for hoots, I checked the service manual and they said to hand tighten. I guess they must hav King Kong working in the Brampton plant

I haven't read filter boxes in awhile, what has always worked for me:

When rubber gasket just touches, continue by hand no more than 3/4 of a turn. (always lubricate the rubber gasket prior to install)

I like to fill the filter with oil before install, helps get the oil going at startup. (unless it mounts horizontally , like my truck)

I hope the "P" boys tool works for you!

Use the K&N filter. It has a 1" nut cast into the bottom. Makes it easier to remove even if it has been hand tightened + 3/4 turn. Also a very good filter.
