300C 5.7 and CRD Diesel - opinion from Ireland

Hi Guys!!

I hope you're OK. Very VERY windy and rainy all week long. It makes me sad. Can't wait for the sun to shine [or at least for the rain to stop] so I can have some fun in my SRT8.

That said...

Click on THIS to see what the 'CarBuyersGuide' from Ireland thinks of the 300C HEMI and CRD.

Good find. Overall postive it would appear. However, seems to be some conflicting info within the article and side bar. Article 9at end) says ride is excellent, but score in side bar (depending on which location you read) was either 7/10 or 6/10.

Another good find Craig….our spokesman from Canada for the CRD. It was mostly positive…nothing that hasn’t been said before about our beauties.

Hi GoofyTimL!!

I noticed that too. But I see that a lot - in all sorts of different road test ratings. The 'numbers' don't always match the 'commentary'. 6/10 or even 7/10 sure doesn't 'sound' like 'the ride is excellent'!!

Hi srt8danno!!

They really are wonderful cars - aren't they!!

And speaking of the CRD... In Canada - diesel fuel must [now] be 'low-sulphur'. [As in having 95% less - from what I understand] And it's the sulphur that causes the black exhaust. [Which is one of the main turn-offs for owning a diesel - at least it is for ME] If any car could get people to at least consider buying 'diesel' - I think the 300 could do it.

Craig!!
I have covered 14500 miles in my CRD, and am amazed how clean the engine is. There is never any hint of exhaust smoke from the car, no matter how hard you push it. The tailpipes are spotless after this mileage, the inside of the pipes are as clean as the day it was made, really amazing. I dont know how UK diesel differs from Canada or USA. This engine is really very good.

I like how the performance is 9/10 - and would love to see what a 10/10 car for a comparable is o_O

Or what they consider a comparable!

Likewise for the engine options o_O WTF mate.

AGAIN on the 9/10 - it doesn't make sense, if it's so great a design why do they only give it a 9? lol.

Safety: I agree on! Side curtains should be standard and they should have lower side airbags as an option, shame they don't, but at least side curtains are an option.

*shrug* can't disagree with a ton else except the "low rent" feel - most of the stuff is awesome in my book even for a car of its cost, the only two turnoffs being that they used cheap-ish-ly implemented plastic on the lower center console and on the arm rests in the door panels. The driver's side lower dash REALLY should have been thought out some (passenger's side is fine and the glovebox is .. just right IMHO]. On the 07s, it looks even funnier, though I think it's just the style of trunk release button (and the really cheap looking recess) they used.

Oh well, what they substituted in interior features they gave in suspension/brakes/engine. Look at Acura, for about the same price you get a FWD V6 that has way less power and the brakes, while high end, aren't as good. Shoot, it even has a slightly bigger turning radius (I think). OTOH, they don't get ANYTHING on the 300c with features (a few tiny ones, I suppose, but stuff like the autoglide and a full power passenger seat don't even exist as options on the TL - I don't know if both mirrors dip down in reverse either!). It does look geekier with its fancy ass cluster, and the seats seem a little better as well though.

*shrug*

Look at the freakin' prices!

3.0 V6 CRD LE Saloon €58,500 Touring 3.0 V6 CRD LE Touring €63,295 5.7 V8 HEMI Saloon €73,700 Touring 5.7 V8 HEMI Touring €78,495 And a € (euro) is about $1.28. The equivalent dollar price of the "Touring 5.7 V8 HEMI Touring" is $100,473 . More than an S-Class?

Here are some quotes from the article:

"Easily the most attractive car to come out of America since the ‘66 Mustang. The 300 is brash and unapologetic and has a presence no European luxury car can manage. The proportions are glorious also, with short overhands and a low, racy roofline. It’s a joy to behold."

I agree completely. It does look better than most mercs, bimmers, etc.

"Ah. See, the 300C might ride supremely well and waft along in hushed luxury, but it’s not a huge fan of corners. The steering wheel is huge, the steering is kind of slow and there’s not much feedback. It’ll grip hard and corner hard, but you won’t be part of the action."

You shoulda tried an SRT8 if you want cornering, you wouldn't say that!

"For such an expensive vehicle, the 300C isn’t very nicely finished inside. The dash looks slightly low rent and there’s nothing posh about the switchgear or dials. The driving position is excellent, though, and it’s an easy cabin to get used to."

It's expensive for them, not for us!

Ok

here are the uk prices in $
300C CRD $48650
S320 CDI $100270
300C HEMI $62000
S500 $127650

Does that clarify the pricing position at all for you.

All prices are list price with no options on them. The Uk 300C does come as standard with a few bits that you have to pay extra for.
