Laminated Side Glass

Hi Guys!!

I'll try to make this short!! On Friday - my apartment [along with four other units] was broken into. The guy [who we 'caught' on our video security camera] broke the bedroom windows and climbed in by sliding them open. He didn't actually end up getting too much - although he did get about $500 in cash from my neighbour and a metal fire-proof lock box from me. He took nothing else. Just looking for money. [As are most thieves in my city] Sadly - for me - the lock box contained the last letter my dad ever wrote to me.

The thief is a 50-something Ed Asner look-a-like. AND most likely - retarded. And I know this because a resident [not knowing what he had just done] met him as he was leaving the building. It's becoming increasingly common in my city for drug dealers to get retarded or mentally ill 'street people' hooked on a drug and then do all of their dirty work [i.e. breaking into places] for them. Nice guys, eh?!

Well anyways... needing a new window - I decided to consider my options regarding security. I decided to replace that broken pane with laminated glass. And I'll probably replace all of the panes with laminated glass sometime soon. As usual - before I make up my mind on anything - I surf the net. Well.... within a matter of minutes - I went from reading websites on laminated glass for homes, etc, to reading sites about laminated glass for CARS. lol

As most of us know - the front windshield on all cars is laminated glass and the side windows and the rear window are tempered glass. Some people are now advocating that all vehicle glass should be laminated. They say that many lives would be saved IF less people were 'thrown' from their vehicles during an accident. [Click on all of the links below - if you like - to read more about this]

Something that I did NOT know is that both the Buick Lucerne and the Dodge MegaRam already have laminated side glass. And one can order laminated front door side glass on a Ford Crown Victoria. I'm sure there are other cars - but I couldn't find any.

QUESTION ONE: What do YOU think? Should all vehicles have laminated glass for side windows?!

QUESTION TWO: IF you like the idea - would you pay extra if Chrysler offered laminated side windows on our LX's?! And how much would you be willing to pay?!

IMO anything on a car regarding saftey should come stock. Even side curtain airbags. If it jacks the price up a little bit, oh well. That's the price you pay to possibly save your life.

I hear you there CPL!!! Anything to do with saftey should be standard!!!So what if the base price of the car is 26k instead of 24k isnt your life worth more than 2k!!

On another note I like to watch "To catch a thief" its about 2 ex-burglars who break into peoples homes to show them how vulnerable they are. Then they upgrade the house with cool securtiy stuff and come back a couple week later to make sure the people are using thier new stuff. Its pretty good!!!
Anyways they have this film that they put on the window and the film holds the glass together. I mean they were hitting this thing with a baseball bat and it still wouldnt get knocked out of the payne. The glass broke but the stuff held the window together. I forgot what it was called but it stops anyone from breaking a window and unlocking doors/windows to get in the house.

Sorry to read of your break-in Craig and very tragic about losing your Dad’s last letter. As Luke mentioned about Discovery’s It Takes A Thief they do us this security laminate film. It is very similar to film I had put on my windows to help prevent breakage during a hurricane. Very cool stuff.

Safety stuff should be standard on a car...there is no price greater than being safe!

Luke that show is pretty cool and because of that show I have security out the ying yang!

The redesigned 2004 Dodge Durango was the first Chrysler vehicle to include laminated side glass as standard equipment. 2005-up Grand Cherokee models also have this feature. I have it on my 2006 Grand Cherokee SRT8.
