Low Fuel Ind

For the SRT (and I guess all 300s)

When the low fuel indicator light comes on does anyone know about how much gas is left?

I have averaged it to be about 2 gallons left. The DTM usually says about 20 miles left.

I came reeeeeeal close one time. DTM said 0 as I rolled into the gas station...

I just wasn't paying attention because I was getting yelled at from my girlfriend

Bring up the EVIC and check. The top #'s are fuel pressure (I think). The Lt= and Rt= are the amount for gas in pints of the left and right side of the tank. The 19g is the total capacity with the Ave=time based ave in pints as well. I just recently filled up so:

76+71=147 147/8=18.375 gallons

Is that really what the numbers are? pints per side? I always wondered.
Mine go up to 80 when full 160/8= 20 gallons....
Not saying your wrong, just that doesn't add up for me when full.

That's what the numbers are...just about exactly 1.9 gallons when the light comes on. Bewhere that once it gets below avg 4 pints it looses it's mind. I tried to drive down to 2 pints and didn't make it. Anything above 5 pints is very acurate.

This is from the Owners Manual.

When the Distance-To-Empty (DTE) value is less than 30 miles (48 km)
estimated driving distance, the DTE display will
change to a text display of LOW FUEL. This display
will continue until the vehicle runs out of fuel. Adding
a significant amount of fuel to the vehicle will turn off
the LOW FUEL text and a new DTE value will
display.

Low Fuel Indicator Light
When the fuel level drops to 1/8 tank, the fuel
symbol will light and a single chime will sound.

One time, my bro had this bright idea to take a "shortcut" on our way from NorCal to Vegas, so we got off I-5 at route 223, to get back on at 58. When we got off 5, I had just missed the gas station, and my DTE said 46 miles, the town was about 35-40-ish IIRC on the sign when we got off the freeway, so I figured it'd be close, but there weren't any gas stations right there so I figured there'd be one right along the way!

There we are, driving down this road in the middle of nowhere, gas is pretty low, 30.. okay. Hopefully a station will be around soon!

*15 mins later*

DING! *gas light comes on*
*continues on about another 10 mins with that stupid light on

I never thought I'd get there without running out of gas o_O

....which brings up this thread related question...

The "urban legend" is that if you suck the last gas out of your tank, you're pulling up all the rust and sludge thats been in there. Since a few things have changed over the years, such as car's tanks being made of aluminum not steel: filtration at the gas stations being better, etc, should a car's gas filter be changed after a "run to dry?"

Also where is the gas filter on the 5.7 or 6.1 engine? I remember being told that our Intrepid RT had no "user replaceable" gas filter.

It is only an urban legend. If you drive your car on a fairly regular basis, say at least once every 6 months, you will never accumulate any sludge in the gas tank. But if you let your car sit for several years without it moving with a low amount of gas in the tank, I can see how the condition could happen, but mostly due to the gas going bad.

I looked in the 2006 LX parts manual and there is no mention of any fuel or gas filters anywhere. So it appears that these cars don't have or need them.
