vin number breakdown

Does anyone know what each letter and number in the vin stands for. I have used search and did not find anything. If there is a thread give me a link for it please.

line number 4 on my vin there is a "L" it does not mach up with any thing. Oh and number one is a "2" not a 1. Did my dealer read this wrong or is this something new.
