What are symptoms of bad tie rods?

How do you know if your tie rods are bad? Will the dealer let you know when you go in for service? What kind of tests could I perform to check them?

Clunking noises, wandering, and overall poor handling..... increased tire wear...

Quote:
By taking weight off front end with jack, check play side to side and top to bottom of wheels. If knuckle of tie rods have play, it is a pretty good indicator it is time to replace. Sometimes if tie rods bad, hitting a bump on highway will affect steering and feel sway.

My first guess is to jack the car up, and grab the tire in the 9 & 3 O'Clock position and see if it wiggles or makes noises.
Not sure how to test if the inner our outer tie rods are bad.

Here are some Youtube vids of bad tie rods.

I just replaced my inner tie rods. Thats seems to be which parts are going bad cause i had to call all over the U.S to get two and there were only three left all on back order. Don't let them tell you that the whole rack/pinoin is bad the reason they do that is to fix the problem, because the rack/pinoin comes with the inner tie rods. They tried doing that to me. My 300C would shake really bad when braking and the steering wheel would shake or vibrate while driving, and would turn akward. The tie rods were about 59.00/piece and to change should only run about 150-200.00 cause they have realign the car after. If you do have to change rack/pinoin its about 590.00 just for the part. Well hope this helps.
