Question about DSS Mode on 368 watt Kicker Amp

I just installed the 368w (KICK18) 8 channel Amp with the upgraded Kicker Speakers. The instructions with the AMP say when you put it in the DSS mode, you can tell its in this mode because it will automaticly set the balance. When I switch between modes, I can hear a difference, but I can change the balance (and fade, etc,) also, so I don't know what mode I'm in. Is this normal, and the instructions are wrong?
In one mode, I can barely make out anything coming out of the rear speakers. Is like it looks for a certain frenqucey, which ends up sounding like every other note or word. Is this normal?
Also the High's seem to sound staticy, but that might be the station. I can tell the sirus radio does not sound all that well before or after the upgrade.
I don't have the VSS, just looking for better sound.

Thanks,
Kevin
