thumping noise from front....please help

As I was coming back to work from lunch I started hearing this thumping noise coming from the front. It is very periodic and the speed is based on the rpm. It does not happen when I take my foot off the gas or apply the break. It did not happen when I was going into reverse while parking. I've looked under the car and didn't see anything. Anyone had the problem before or have some ideas on what I should check? I plan on jacking it up when I get home, hopefully it's ok to drive about 4 miles. The sound is a deep plastic sound, not a high pitch metal sound.

I had a noise like that , But it would only thump a few times then stop, and it turned out to need the outer tie rods replaced. The dealer found and fixed first visit, car had 12k miles at the time.

Thanks Chris. When I got back in the car after work today I drove it around the parking lot a few times and didn't hear anything. took it slow down some backroads to the house and everything seemed good. got it up to speed about 60 mph and still nothing. not sure what it was, maybe a rock or stick stuck in the tire. will continue to keep an ear out for it. next time I'm at the dealer I'll have them look at the tie rods too just to be sure.
