How can I program my own Transponder Keys?

I just bought two new keys for my 300 off of Ebay.

One has the integrated remote control and the other is just a key.

Is there a way we can program our own Keys?

You'd have to have access to a StarScan tool I believe. On the one that is just a key, it used to be that the grey ones had the chip in them that could be programmed and the black ones did not; so it may only be useful as a spare door key, but not to start the car.

You can program them yourself as long as you currently have 2 programmed keys, your owners manual has directions on how to program. If you currently only have one programmed key the dealer will have to program at least one.

Strattec keys

I got a couple of these keys for my car but the programming would not work. All I can think of is that my car was a former rental car and the rental company programmed the maximum 8 keys so my car can't program any more. It makes sense that the rental company does not want people to be able to create extra keys for their cars (joyride, anyone?). I am also curious about whether the 8 maximum keys can be changed without actually going through with programming 8 actual keys. Anyone else have this problem. I assume that a Startec can still program the keys but that means paying the dealer to do it.
