How dark a tint is legal in Ca?

What is the measure a police officer uses to determine if the tint is to dark? I'm in particular concerned about Ca. law and how it's applied to the window tint. Also, about how much does it cost to do all the legal glass? Cecil......

I'm in the market as well but will likely tint the fronts slightly darker than legal but roll the dice with johnny law..
