About 1st oil change

I have heard at least a couple of schools of thought on doing the 1st oil change. 1k, 1.5K, 3k, the book says 3K, and I am planning on switching to Synthetic. I'm not sure if I should wait till the 2nd change to do that just to make sure that everything gets seated properly, and it gets broken in.
I've been checking my oil level very closely, and it is staying put; it was about a quart low when I got the car. The dealer didn't check the fluid levels on it before doing delivery to the customer, ME. But since they topped it off, it seems to be fine.
I'm approaching 3K, and am trying to decide to change to synthetic now or wait till the next change. SO WHAT DO YOU GUYS N GALS THINK?

Model57,

Hello, I switched to synthetic right from the start. My 300 has the 2.7 V6 and I had read about the past history of the 2.7 building up sludge after a period of time. I did some investigation and the techs at the shop had suggested switching to synthetic because of my concerns. Yes, I pay a little bit more for oil changes now, but as the old saying goes, "An ounce of prevention, is worth a pound of cure." My dealer offers either Mobil 1 or Amsoil. I am using Amsoil in my 300 currently.

I hope this helps.

Sincerely yours,

Brian T. Carotenuto

Model 57,

Well, with about 2,500 miles on the odometer, I just had my car's first oil/filter change performed yesterday. At the same time, I had the oil switched to 5W20 'Mobil 1', which happens to be the only synthetic motor oil brand/viscosity that my particular 'Five Star' Chrysler dealer recommends for the 'LX platform' models. This works for me , as I was going to get the 'Mobil 1' all along anyway as it's more prevalent here on the west coast. Although the first oil/filter change wasn't free (it ran me about $66), at least the car wash was.

P.S. Hello Brian (gossame1)...I'm glad to here that your car's body repair went well.

I switched to synthetic right away... er, at least I tried to.
My oil change was supposed to be free, however I was told I would be charged the diff for synthetic... understood. Go to the cashier... no charge. Hmmm, look at the invoice and it's coded. I ask for an interpretation and was told the codes were for stock Mopar oil. Supposedly, they didn't carry synth. in the correct wt... did they send a runner? call me to bring oil over? even ask me how I'd like them to proceed?... NO, they just did it...Grrr.
Needless to say, my next oil change was no charge, including the $ diff. for the synth. (which they now carry stock btw).

Long story longer... call in advance and ask what oil they use for their stock. If they don't have what you want, take it with you... 7 qts.

HEMEE - What dealer do you use for oil changes / service? I'm not too far from you and could sure use a referral to a good 5* dealer!

Thanks!!

Hi Jasper, I currently go to WestOaks, out near you... they are a 5*, and I have no idea why, but they beat the alternative out here in Simi... to be avoided like the Plague!
If you try WestOaks, just stay on top of them. Service Advisor (writer) I would recommend is Mark St. Pierre. My first experience here was a complete nightmare from start to finish, and since then they know me by first name But to be fair, they recently cleaned house in the sevice dept. so I am giving them another chance, otherwise I'll try a dealer in the SFV. Feel free to PM me for more info.

Sorry Model 57... back to YOU!

WestOaks is great, thats where I bought mine. They even offered 2 sets of new tires if I do all the maintenance there. Too bad I'll be getting new 20" shoes for it, 2 sets of tires is a good deal!

I agree their sales staff is wonderful, however, if you haven't been there for service yet, beware, as per my earlier post...
2 sets of tires would be a fabulous deal... if they weren't Contis, I can't wear mine out fast enough! (Zoomers is helping with that though )

Thanks for all the responses. I think that I am going to make the change in the next day or so. I have had great luck with the Amsoil, (the 1st synthetic), and will probably continue to use it in the C.
I usually do my own oil changes, and most all of my maintenance and repairs. Just don't really trust others to "do it right"
I have one great mechanic/friend who is located only about a mile & a half from the house. When I have something that I can't do, or don't have the time to do, I go see him.
I plan to do this one myself and learn where things are, so I will be finding out all about these 4 (10mm) was it? bolts to drop the cover pan to get to the pan & filter.
Thanks again.
