What would you do when you can't get the title for your car you paid for?

I purchased my car and cashed it out. The dealer I purchased it from said to give them a day or two and they will get the title out to me. That was two weeks ago and I do not have a title. My car will be finished Monday with all repairs and paint being done.

Do I call the police?
Can I go to DMV and show them proof of payment and pray for a duplicate?
Do I take the photo copy they sent me and pray for a duplicate?

Before I sent the money, they'd answer all my questions and put me on hold to find the right guy and etc. Now that I'm paid in full, it's like I don't friggin exist. "Yeah, we'll get the message to him if we see him today."

The guy is 900 miles away from me. If he was local, I'd go there.

Advise me please! No guns. No goons. No threats. I got 2 strikes, not looking for a third.

Be more persistent. When they say, "We'll get him the message if we see him," you say, "No, you find him now and put him on the phone." Be as stern as you can without being rude I guess would be my advice, it works well enough for me
Since it's a dealer I'm not sure what the standard protocol would be, but I'd let them know that you'll be contacting the authorities if they keep taking you for a ride.

In most states car dealers are regulated by the DMV, so I would start there. Don't be too alarmed yet though; 2 weeks may be normal. But that is where I would start.

If you have proof you paid them (I assume you have paperwork and something showing you paid them) and they cannot produce a title they could lose their dealer's license in most states so they don't wanna get on the wrong side of the DMV.

Fat Tony has two strikes against him. Technically I am on my 4th strike, I had two "expunged" off of my record. Best fifteen hundred bucks I ever spent.

Going to follow up with a polite phone call tomorrow. Going to DMV with my receipt. Legal ways are not as fast (or fun) as the old way, but it'll get worked out.

DMV has nothing to do with dealerships. I have never heard of this.

The best way to get the title is to tell them you want to return the car. They cant sell you a car that cant be registered.

The Title is with the company that you had the lien with. If that was the dealer then its the dealers bank that has it and it could take time for them to send it to you. 2 weeks isn't that long. But the dealer is being dickish by not being courteous to you now that you paid it off.
I know here in IL you have to have the original title to register the car.

Have you never have the car registered yet?

There was never a lien, I purchased a wrecked car and he had the title in his hands because he faxed me a copy.

I did get in contact with him. He promised it would go out tomorrow (Monday) overnight. I will call 90 times to get tracking number. If no title arrives on Tuesday, then I am going to try screwing with DMV supervisor, contacting his Police Department and I am going to be a ginormus pain in his arse. I'm even willing to file a lawsuit against him for damages, pain, suffering, anguish, worries, storage fees, etc.

The old me would never have run into this problem.

When you're nice, courteous, calm, pleasant, people think you're a push over. When the Joisey City (Kennedy Blvd) Ghetto Guido comes out (he died) people will do anything to avoid confronting you.
