Brilliant Black is not brilliant

I don't know about how the rest of you feel, but I'm very disappointed with the black paint that Chrysler picked. I finally got delivery on my SRT8 and I'm happy with the car, but what was Chrysler thinking when they came up with this Pearl Black. Half the time it looks faded or dirty. I've had a vehicle that was painted black and it was beautiful. I would have picked the silver but the last major car we had was silver, and I'm silvered out. No, not going to spend money on another paint job. Just wanted to vent a little and wonder how many other people out there feel the same way. Maybe its just me. Cecil...........

I haven't owned a lot of cars, but I really like this colour. If you don't know much about detailing (as I didn't), it's pretty important to get versed in it to keep the car looking nice.

Wow, I just noticed that you're in Aptos. I'm taking my car down to Aptos next weekend to see a friend. I'll keep my eyes peeled for you.

Congrats on the purchase, and I hope you come around on the colour.

Cecil - that really sucks! I’ve seen several black ones and they’ve always looked very beautiful. I had a black Lincoln LS that really had messed up paint- so maybe I’m comparing it to that. Does it need to be detailed/clayed or have you tried that yet? Perhaps there is some residue on it????? It would really suck to finally get your car and not care for the color. OUCH. Good luck and congrats on finally landing a beast!

IMO, none of the colors are that great, or eye catchers. The hardest thing for me buying my C was picking a color. I drove the dealer 2 or three times just to look at colors. Finally picked magnesium over black, only because I was burnt out on black. But over time the colors start to grow on you. Or maybe they become an acquired taste. Cadillacs have some nice looking colors. Paint colors is defiantly a weak point in Chrysler cars.

Its not the detailing, its the color in certain light. Doesn't it look faded or more charcoal to you at times? I remember a single stage black I used once and they are just different. I will just have to get use to it. As Joey says, maybe it'll grow on me. Cecil.........

It is indeed an unusual variety of black, with a metal flaking as opposed to the usual flat black. A similar "flakey" paint is used for the Midnight Blue, and to my eyes at least the look is very rich and attractive. But I prefer it in blue.

DESIREE is a BB and I also feel it has a gray or dirty look to it, except when just washed and sitting in the sun where the metal flake can sparkle "brilliant"-ly. In overcast conditions the metal flake just seems to reflect the grayishness and makes it look like it had a couple of days worth of dust and dew collected on the surface. I too have/had other black cars - pure black - Chrysler's and others. Metal flake in black just doesn't get it.

When I first got my C in Brilliant Black metallic pearl coat, I found that the paint did indeed, grey out, under low light.

However, it doesn't do this anymore. The solution was to build up a super slick, clear protective finish, then add depth to it. My car literally glows, even in very low light conditions.

It takes a lot of work, at first, but, then it is quite easy to maintain.

Here is a recent pic in very overcast conditions:

"WORK" is a four-letter word!

I felt the opposite of you when I took delivery.

I thought it was just black, not metal flake.

I think it looks great over the boring standard black.

Look closely at the Bluish Purple, Green, and Silver metal flake.

It looks awesome!
