I recently installed the Lmi hammer and around 29% throttle there is a very high pitched whistling noise. I hear it most in second gear. Also my window has to be down to catch it. What could it be. I've checked connections and everything. Also, I haven't noticed any gains at all. I know it's not supposed to be much but I thought it would help me out some. Please help!!
If all you did was the cai I would recommend doing a tuner too. Like a predator, intune, trinity. Also a 180° tstat and if you want some exhaust. Then with the tuner you can put in a "canned tune" which is one of the three preinstalled tunes on the tuner. At least on the predator I believe there is three. After deciding on which one is for you there are still many parameters you can adjust. Like throttle response, when the fans kick on to compliment the tstat, shift points etc...
Basically you need a tuner to get the most out of your modifications otherwise those mods aren't anywhere close being used to their full potential.
Sorry I forgot to mention I already have predator and 180 Tstat. I made no improvements over the 91 canned tune with the 91 cai tune and Lmi hammer. In fact my best 0-60 run was 4.9 without the cai. All my runs are on the same street at around the same time as well.
The horsepower gains that 99% of CAIs add is not noticeable, maybe 3 to 6 horsepower. If you put a car on a dyno the figures you get will vary that much from pull to pull. So even if you get that much of a bump it won't be noticeable to your "butt-dyno".
As far as the whistle noise goes; refer to #2 . You may also notice that when you shut off the car you will hear a new noise as well, almost like a bit of compressed air being released. These are just typical CAI noises.
a true cold air intake installed on my car
Most of us like the "noise" ::biggrin::
FYI, the "hammer" style intakes add the most noise as it acts like a megaphone for all the intake sounds.
Ok so the whistle noise at that exact throttle position is normal? Don't get me wrong I love the noise it makes at wot and the sucking sound at low throttle. I was just worried about that whistle. I don't know If I didn't install it right or there was a hole in the filter or something. And I know not much gains are to be expected but with the hammer I expected to see a slight decrease in my times. Idk
Check to make sure the sleeve over the throttle body didn't fold over, at the bottom, when you installed it. They can be tricky and it's easy for them to fold over and have a gap.
Keep in mind that these cars weigh 4000+ pounds. You need somewhere in the neighborhood of 17 to 20 hp to reduce your quarter mile times by a tenth. (Google: how much horsepower required to reduce 1/4 mile time a tenth? to see the various hp/weight/quarter mile time charts. You will see that the old adage of 10HP=.1 sec is for a 2500 lb car) A CAI isn't going to get you anywhere near that much of an increase. The CAI might actually be giving you an increase in performance but because it is so small and variables such as track condition, tire tread/pressure, air density/temp/humidity and driver consistency you may not be seeing it. Don't get me wrong, a CAI is a nice upgrade, but it isn't that big a power adder.
Whistling is normal with the hammer design (both original and LMI)... it's a combo of the open filter and conical design, they do whistle a bit under part throttle. Mine used to do it pretty loud... people used to ask if the car was boosted. Funny stuff... if everything is tight, don't worry about it.
Ok cool thanks for the input I appreciate it. Ya I've heard a lot of people saying most cai have some sort of whistle but then again I didn't read any about the hammer specifically. Good to know. Hey 06 hemi, I read a few posts where you were talking about budget cam builds. Well I have the VCT engine and I'm interested in doing one. I started a thread in the performance section and I would appreciate a lil advixe. Thanks everyone
