Ugh no that doesn't explain it at all, but all they're doing is messing with the frequency of the electrical wave There's a reason there's only a very slight difference in those pics above

I'm treading on unknown ground here but it appears by default EL glows green-ish or blue-ish, and there isn't a lot you can do about that if you want any other color except using film overlays..

BUT I'm positive there's film specific for that purpose..

Although, actually, you can get it in white, and then that's when the film is used.
I found this statement in your link interesting:

Quote:
In principle, EL lamps can be made in any color. However, the commonly-used greenish color closely matches the peak sensitivity of human vision, producing the greatest apparent light output for the least electrical power input.
I actually like the green colour!

That is true, but everyone seems to differ in opinion on what SHOULD be used, the audi fanboys say red is the best because it affects your night vision the least. Because your eyes are so sensitive to green, you can use a much dimmer light than you would with red, OTOH here's my argument for preservation of night vision:

The moment a car (especially a truck/SUV) comes at you at night, forget about adaptiveness to night vision. Prob is the lights on oncoming vehicles can be more annoying than a cluster can..

I'd think if I wanted to change the cluster color I'd go for either a soft blue or white. Prob is it'd look downright weird with any other color (maybe even a bit ricer).

With this morpher, do you still need to take apart the dash or does it mount / wire somewhere else?

you only really have to take the bottom part off, do you have to do a lot to get at that?

I believe your gauges would come off and hook it up back there, you can get power from your clock.

I wonder why 300C members never did this.

That's how I hooked mine up and this is what it should look like.

Ugh. EL materials suck ass to work with. TBH I'd be more tempted to just disconnect the whole arrangement and put LED arrays around the outsides of the gauges. About thirty 0306 (smaller than a grain of rice) LED's with a frosted ring of plastic would do the job nicely I think.
