I have an 06 300C I just picked up used and the headlights are the crappy halogen yellowish. I know several people with OTHER makes/models that have converted them with the simple, inexpensive plug and play HID's. I would love to do the same. With the newly aquired car payment I don't have a lot of extra cash floating around for the expensive kits like the one AAC offers.
As I've read through TONS AND TONS of posts, I've found that a lot of people seem to be having problems with flickering, lights going out, and loud buzzing. It seems as though some people speculate and say it's because the electronic system is advanced and looking for certain draws from the headlights which is altered by adding this kit, others say something about reverse polarity coming from the Benz/German engineering, I've heard you need to add relays and/or capacitors and I've heard people say that doesn't help.. Some people seem to favor HIDGate but I'm still not sure about additional wiring.
My question to you is this, has anyone found an inexpensive kit and installed it, then had lasting success? If so, I would appreciate any feedback as to which kit you ordered, what additional wiring was required, and how/how long it's been working out for you. I clearly see that you guys seem to stand behind AAC as far as product quality but I'm not in position to drop that kind of dough on this product just yet. Maybe I'll add halos and whatnot later, but I'm looking for a quick, inexpensive, simple upgrade.
Also, my car was lacking the spare tire, jack, etc which I forgot to check before I bought it. Can you recommend anywhere to find a cheap replacement set. I've hit the local junkyards and had no luck so far. Thanks for any help guys!!
I purchased and installed HIDgate low (9006) and fog (9145) on my C approx 6 months ago. I just provided year, make and model. They sent me ALL items needed to install. I reversed the caps in the ballast. Everything is straightforward and very easy to install. Maybe 45 minutes if that. I have no issues with flickering. If I'm outside I can hear a buzz from the ballast's for about 15 secs that gets quieter during that time. After that they are silent. No issues. And for teh price even if I had to replace something,I won't complain.
Thanks Bob.. So I assume you ordered them off ebay then gave them the info through your ebay purchase? And was reversing the caps covered in the instructions? I'm about to bust out the plastic
Yes. I ordered them off ebay and gave them the info in the special instructions box. Also be sure to tell them what temp you want. 4300K is yellowish white,6000K is pure white with a very, very small touch of blue. 8kis blue and above that they get purplish.
Instrcutions did not say about reversing. The leads are black or red. You just pull bulb out replace, and plug in ballast, then lead to lights.(caps between supply and ballast. If it does not come on,just reverse the cap. Don't touch the bulb with your fingers,
When we had a 2005 C with the halogens we purchased bulbs from Stealth Auto, and their performance was plug and play with no flickering (although the initial power connection had to be reversed). I also bought their bulbs for the MSRT8 headlights and fogs... and eventually put them in the fogs of the 2006 Heritage Edition.
I have write-ups of my installs in the Tech Section and the Stealth Auto Forum.

In love with my first wife & first car ('68 Charger) ... still have the wife
but now there's the Heritage Edition and a Magnum SRT8!
HID Gate Low's and Driving lights. Did not have to reverse any wiring, was plug and play. Lost a low beam bulb at the 1.5 year mark, just lost a driving light bulb, nearly 2 years. Replacement bulb pairs, 26 dollars shipped.
Never flickered.

You did all the research and you nailed "what" specifically causes the problem. Now, why someone would have problems with an aftermarket kit when using the Capacitors is beyond me. I know mine have worked flawlessly with just capacitors, but my electrical system is otherwise stock. I do not have huge subs in the trunk or anything like that, so it's possible the addition of a big system, causes other issues.
