Ballast Question

Where is the factory hid ballast located? I have a bad one (I assume - because the light doesn't work with a known good bulb in it). Called dealer, they said $160 for the ballast and $14 to install it. To me - this says that if they are only charging $14 to install it it must be REALLY easy to get to?? So can some show me a pic or something so I know where it is and how to swap it? (I figure I can get an oem one online for less then the $160 as well) I know how to swap the bulbs - been there done that - just don't know where the ballast is...

The ballast is on the back of the bulb and should look very similar to this

That's not the ballast. That's just the bulb.
Factory ballast is mounted to the bottom of the housing. To get to the housing out you have to pull the front facia.
$14.00 sounds like a pretty good price to change the ballast.
Good luck!

So do you know of a "how to" somewhere to show me how to get to it?? Cuz I'm thinkin the guy at the dealer that told my wife $14 didn't know what the heck he was talking about... I have looked online and have not found much on the factory ones - just on all the aftermarket conversion kits??

I agree! And it wouldn't be the first time a dealer didn't know what they were talking about.
There are a few threads on pulling the front facia, not that hard. Done mine at least 10 times.
Then it's just unbolting the headlights. The ballasts are screwed to the bottom of them in a little indention in the plastic. Very obvious once you get the lights out.

The ballast is connected to the bulb if you have hid's and the module is connected underneath the headlight housing and to get to it you have to take off the bumper.

You can buy a set of bulbs with ballasts online for much cheaper than 1 bulb and ballast from Chrysler trust me I been through all this. I had a faulty bulb that kept blowing the modules changed it 3 times when i first bought my car and Chrysler kept screwing me over!

The D1S factory HID system, has the ignitor and capsule integrated. It is the D1S capsule here:

The Ballast on-the-other-hand is mounted to the bottom of the headlight housing with four torx screws. The headlight housing must be removed in order to access the ballast. It is fastened to the upper rad crossmember with three fasteners. Two on the top which are easily accesible.

The bottom fastener can only be accessed by partially removing the fascia (bumper cover). There was a detailed thread in the how-to section, that no longer shows the images. Use this video here:

If the D1S capsule needs replacement, headamp housing removal is a must, which means partial removal of the fascia either way.
