Again, this is not a race so we do not look at Snell dates, etc. Any full size helmet, open face or full face will work. We are not excited by the 3/4 motorcycle helmets or the German-style and we will have some loaners, not many but a few.

Hello folks, can I get some suggestions on where I should buy these full sized helmuts? Either online or at a brick and mortor site. Also, should I equip my car with a leather bra to lessen stone hits to the front...again listening for advice on prepping a car in case I get on the driver's list.

Thank you in advance,
edward

It's almost impossible to beat eBay's prices on items like helmets. I've bought several, like new, at about 20% of new cost.

The leather bra sounds like an excellent alternative to taping, but more expensive. I'll be taping mine. You can get the easily removed, yet stays put at 140mph, blue painter's tape at any hardware store. I bought it in both 4" and 2" widths and will cover essentially the same areas with it that a car bra would cover.

This would be a good time to install the transparent headlamp cover protective film if you havn't done so already.

helmets

If you visit any motorcycle shop I think you can find helmets at a wide range of prices. I prefer open face so I can be heard more easily when speaking..or shouting or....screaming! But check out some of the bike shops. I bought a Pyrotec open face helmet from Tim Herren at about $130.00 new. For what we are doing, that is the most I would pay. I am sure you can do better by shopping around a bit.

Thanks for these informative answers on helmets and the painter's tape. One more question about helmets that maybe the track instructor could answer for me. I would like to purchase just one helmet for this event and also for autocross/solo and drag events at the racetracks in southern california. Could one helmets qualify for this universal use?

Thanks again for your inputs,
edward

At all the events I have participated in lately, autocross, open track days, etc. I have never had anyone even look at my helmet. All anyone wanted to see was a helmet, nothing more. My drag buddies I have contacted say the same thing. Any normal looking helmet will do...except the 1/2 or 3/4 helmets biker type helmet issue we have already addressed.
The only time I have had anyone look at my helmet for a current Snell sticker was when I was racing SCCA amateur events. In the professional events I have raced, no one has ever looked at any of my driving gear, helmet, underwear or suit. It may be different now but 10 years ago it was as described.

DrDoofuss...

An additional note with regard to purchasing a proper fitting helmet...

Just be aware that all brand helmets do not fit the same (same size vs. same size), so I'd also suggest personally visiting your local motorcycle shop and select one 'in person' to ensure a proper fit; i.e., not too snug to be uncomfortable, yet not to loose to be ineffective - most will include additional adjustment padding.

If you don't have a good motorcycle shop in your particular area, yet might not mind driving to San Bernardino, Chaparral Motorsports has the largest selection that I've ever seen anywhere. I've purchased several helmets from them before in the past and I've never been unhappy. They also have qualified personnel on hand to help ensure that your helmet selection fits you properly, as well as meets your needs.

Update

Update: 1st Alternate deegee has had to cancel, so the list has moved up... WagonDoc, you have a PM!
Please remember that our target date is 1 week from today, those of you on the "unconfirmed" list that have not yet sent me a PM with your expected status, please drop me a line!

Here are the lists, updated to show additional 'confirmed' and new details for the 'unconfirmed' and 'alternates'
*** Please review those details carefully! ***

Remember, if we don't have 20 pre-paid registrants, the event can't happen, so if your name is on the list, but you have decided you cannot participate, please send me a PM immediately so I can open up your spot. If you have encountered a problem with making payment, you can contact me via PM and I will help however I can.

I'm still taking names of alternates for the driver list
...And we'd love to have people sign up to join us for the caravan, a day at the track, and a night of fun afterwards!
