For those of us with the huge, bubble 2005 factory sirius ant. is it possible to switch out the ant from one of the newer, smaller, square ones?
Is it available yet?
You have brought up a very good question. The antenna listings are different for 2005 and 2006, as well as the receivers. The accessory kits are also different, and we have no way of verifying if it is a direct swap. I think the difference is the bus communication system, and we do not know if it would have an adverse effect or not.
You think thats big, wait until you see the new sat antenna for the Pacifica, lol. Picture of it in this months Mastertech for those at DCX dealerships. I have an older antenna laying around, next time I have a headliner down in one with the newere I will try to check and see if the connections and mounting match up.
I had one down today and compared them, the big one uses two antennna cables, the small antenna uses one. So it doesnt look like you can swap them over without changing the receiver. You would need the factory replacement parts, not the Mopar kit, the Mopar add on kit is still being shipped with the big antenna.
The plot is beginning to thicken here. We just had to replace an antenna module on a vehicle in the shop. The new module only has 1 antenna connection, and there is some TSB regarding this. So I will be doing a little investigative research to find out what the deal is. It may turn out that the 2 wire system is now replaced with a single system.
There are commonly available two wire to single wire converters for this. The plastic shells on the connectors will need to be removed and the metal part of the connector plugged in, then secured with tape, or heat shrink tubing, as the Chrysler version is keyed differently.
Some background on this... The first system was two wire. One part number gave you the two wire antenna and receiver and mounting bracket, the other part number gave you the wiring harness and two wire antenna cable.
The newer kit is a single wire antenna (lower profile) and receiver (about half the size of the first kit) with velcro to attach it, instead of a bracket. The harness kit gives you the matching single wire antenna wire and harness.
