After 9 days, my parents home finally had their power restored. They are elderly, and stubborn and insisted on staying there the entire time. Wish they just came here, it would have made my and my brothers life much easier. My brothers home had power restored also on day 9.
My wife's cousin lost his home, boat, & truck. His family is OK and safe. They are staying with relatives. His wife's '06 300C got whacked with alot of debris and is pretty messed up. Everything is insured and he is joking that a 2013 Second Generation 300 may be in their future.
A few mentionable things here ; We are under an Odd-Even Gas rationing system here based on the last digit of your license plate, vanity plates are considered odd. Even plates can buy gas on even days and Odd plates on odd days. The other day I actually witnessed some dude argue with an attendant at an Exxon station about this - the last digit of his plate was a zero, he insisted that zero was odd, - friggin moron.
The trees have to go. There are groups here who hug trees, drive hybrids, eat dirt and insist that a tree NEVER be cut down. These are the first people here screaming at the power companies. What ?, your solar panels aren't producing enough power to run your juicer ? The trees that have grown up and around the utility wires are the main culprit, next to the storm itself, why the power grid is destroyed. It's TIME TO CUT THE TREES. New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country, and the center of the megalopolis that runs from Boston down to Washington D.C., we shouldn't be in this position, we have to be smarter than that. Sure a tree may grow in Brooklyn, but they know when its time to cut it down.
Thugs. My brother lives in a town that borders let us just say, a questionable town at best. The other night he awoke to hear an odd noise ( tripping ) on his porch. Two thugs were there trying to jack his gas cans, generator and maybe break-in. The story ends here for all intents and purposes, but we have to realize that along with the spirit of helping one another, there are those out there that just SUCK.
Today we are waiting on ( can you believe it or not ) a friggin snowstorm with high winds. Predictions are for 5 -6 inches of snow. By the weekend we should have temps back up in the low to mid 60's.
On a lighter note, if I hear another montage of sad news reports played over the background of Bruce Springsteens' " JungleLand " on terrestrial radio, I think I will vomit, Glad I have Sirius XM .
Thanks for that detailed and very well-written report. Glad that all of your family are ok - that is the main thing!
Tree huggers! Those uneducated and misdirected morons have allowed scam artists to turn environmental science into some kind of 'new religion', totally ignorant of the real facts.
Over the past 40 years, Canada and the US have increased the size of our forests by approximately 25%. And it happened through the implimentation of sound forestry practises. Our pulp, paper and lumber industries should be thriving, due to the good stewardship of these resources - right?
Instead, they are struggling - because of the 'tree huggers'. Take the pulpwood industry that creates paper and cardboard products.
The environmentalists have convinced municipalities all across our 2 great nations to 'recycle' these products - at a great cost to the taxpayers -by sending big trucks and personnel to every home to collect the second hand paper and cardboard.
If these products are sold to a plant (for less that 1/10th of the collection costs) for recycling, the plants have to strip the inks off of the products. They use liquid chlorine to do this - and chlorine is a truly danerous product in the environment. Many jurisdictions have now banned the chlorine stripping process.
So where does all this stuff go now? The Chinese buy it and ship it back in all those otherwise empty containers going back to China. They have no concern about dumping millions of gallons of Chlorine into the rivers, ocean and atmosphere over there. And they use the processed result for new packaging of the goods they ship back here.
If we stopped doing this, our production of new, clean fresh paper and cardboard would flourish, creating jobs in our rural areas and the re-forestation of land would again move forward at the pace we saw 10 to 15 years ago.
Instead - because of the tree huggers, we are making the taxpayers poor, creating serious environmental damage with chlorine, closing our forestry plants, laying off hard working people and retarding our excellent re-forestation policies.
<end of rant - sorry -fm1, didn't mean to hijack your thread - my fingers just wouldn't stop typing >
To add insult to injury, we got whacked with a Nor-easter here Wednesday into Thursday which knocked out power for a second time to alot of people who had just had it restored 24 hours earlier. I was fortunate that my power stayed on. The storm brought a good amount of snow which was gone by today.
Scheduled the roofing job - should have my new roof by Thanksgiving. I could have bought a fishing boat or a new Fiat 500 to beat on for what this is costing me but hey, $hit happens.
Glad to hear that everybody is ok and in good health. Don't forget to remove those plates on a daily and bring them inside so they don't get stolen. Gas is in high demand and those no good for nothing degenerates will just make a bad situation worse.
I am so sorry to hear all your problems. My heart goes out to all that lost. I have a close cousin in NewYork. They were without power for several days, flooded streets and lots of trees down. I just pray that everyone here is ok and that your property is all ok. God Bless

fm- Glad everything is relatively OK. What a mess to say the least. I' just got home from Fla, and missed the second half. Our second home did sustain some damage with windows and the roof. We first got a call that all was OK.Still, we are very fortunate.
We drove to Fla,and on the first night the kids wanted to stay in a hotel. In the morning we meet a group from near Asbury Park. One had had no power and 2 others lost homes. In all they said there was nothing they could do and would leave for vacation anyway.
Onbe of the guys that works for us- a hard working 25 y.o. who had just bought a home-and a new motorcycle, lost everything. Shame as he was unemployed for a while before coming with us. He did well and started to make money. Life was getting good for him. Still he was/is massively under insured and will take a long time to recover.
We along the North east corridor are pretty lucky. We go about life day in and day out generally unscathed from,tornadoes-hurricanes-earthquakes. A bad snow storm on the occasion is about it. Now we see the true power of Mother Nature at our doorstep. Brings a reality to those victims elsewhere.
I send thought s to all who have lost because of this and others, and am grateful for what I have more so now than before.
Glad to hear that you and your family are safe and sound, Bob.
A number of crews from various Ontario power utilities have sent crews down to the US East Coast to help with restoring power services.
A friend of ours just returned with his crew yesterday and said that some areas were reallly bad. Another local crew from Ottawa headed down to continue the work.
