Shipping a vehicle...

I just sold my truck and need to ship it from Florida to California. Ive done several searches on Yahoo! and received several quotes and theyre all over $900 on an open carrier. That seems like alot to me. I shipped my car from Florida to New York last year and it was $475 and the same company quoted me at $950 to california

Does anyone know a better or cheaper way to ship it. The buyer is paying for it but he's a good guy and Im trying to help him out. Thanks

The exact cities are Clearwater, FL to San Bernardino, CA and its a 2003 Harley F150...thanks

They are probably just factoring in the high Gas prices. How about rail?

Florida to California is a whole lot further than Florida to New York.

I own a transport company, and I would not even consider doing it for the prices they are quoting you..

We get $900.00 to go from Boston to Miami.

I looked it up on yahoo map and the distance from fl to ca is almost exactly twice as far as the distance from fl to ny...

For some stupid reason the price seemed to much but it doesnt get much more exact than that 475x2=950.... :o

Hmmm....thats kinda embarrassing!

But on the brighter side, i found one for $875

Hey Laker, look at this way time = money and the time it will take the truck to get from point to A to point B = time. I don’t think that’s a bad deal at all, sorry but I didn’t tell what you wanted to hear.

I shipped a 350Z from FL to WA this winter. I checked A LOT of carriers. The cheapest I could get was $900. I wasn't expected it to be that much either, but apparently it is. Good luck.

Last year I sent a '01 Intrepid R/T from a little island in the pacific to Long Beach CA. Took weeks since the car was accidentally off-loaded in Hong Kong for a week. Actually 2 cars since mine was in a sealed container with another car. Anyway, it cost $1850 which included all of the customs papers and the legwork involved. Mileage is like 8,000. The island is Guam which is 7 1/2 HOURS by jet west of Hawaii. So I'm thinking that price to CA is OK, with gas being high now and that it is all surface rail or truck.

There are so-called "drive away" companies that can save you a lot of money. They put together someone wanting to ship a car to a certain location with someone wanting to get to the same location. I used one successfully several years ago to ship a car from OK City to Seattle. Worked fine for me, but there are some inherent risks involved. Most companies are covered by insurance to protect your car from damage or theft.

Here's a link and another

I understand your trepidation. Just depends on how much money he's willing to save in exchange for a nominal risk. The drive away companies do screen their drivers pretty carefully.
