In his will, he left $ 200,000 dollars to the Boys Republic and in 1983, a building was dedicated in his honor and named the Steve McQueen Recreation Center. A bronze plaque inside the Center reads:

Steve McQueen came here as a troubled boy but left here a man. He went on to achieve stardom in motion pictures but returned to this campus often to share of himself and his fortune. His legacy is hope and inspiration to those students here now, and those yet to come.
From another bio:

Although he was the highest paid star of the 1960s Steve McQueen had a reputation for being tightfisted. On some films he would demand 10 electric razors, and dozens of pairs of jeans. It was later found out he gave this stuff to the Chino Reform School for boys, where he spent a few years himself.

Thumbs up mcqueen

Mcqueen studied a bit of jeet kune do from bruce lee , along with james garner, and james coburn. Mcqueen was compared to paul newman (another cool actor) and drove the last part of the car chase in the movie - Bullit !
What more can you ask for...
