Gto Lives

Bob Lutz in Autoweek 3/13/06 says a new redesigned GTO is a definite go in two years to go along with the Camaro, both designed by Holden and may be built here. If they get the styling right things are going to be very interesting. Right now I will get either the Challenger or Camaro depending on which drives best (not necessarily the fastest), I love the styling of both. The GTO could be the dark horse in all this. The one that started it all, the new Mustang will likely not even get a look.

Why woukd they put the GTO and Camaro on the same platform? Why not bring back the Firebird on the same platform with the Camaro as it has traditionaly been?

I disagree... Now GM is going the same way DCX went. The Charger and 300C for example. Both are essentially the same platform but differing a lot more in the way of Luxury, looks, and options than the last gen Firebirds and Camaro's did....there was absolutely no difference between the two besides aesthetics. They were reskinned version of the same exact car.

The firebird can stay dead as far as I'm concerned but the Camaro has the History and needs to come back. Let's hope GM makes the new GTO retro like the new camaro.

Your point about disimilarity between the traditional charger and 300c platforms from the past to now is well taken and I conceed on that point.

But a retro looking GTO like the Challenger and Camaro harken to the 70-73 and 67-69 respectivley?!?!?!?!? with this:

What do you see when you see this concept?!!?!?!?!?????.....
I see a 67-69 FIREBIRD........I don't see no GTO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is why I posed the question above.
The new 300c does have stylng cue that harken to the classic ones....Granted the Charger now has four doors but the A pillars harken the the 66-67 chargers. Both 300c and Chargers where big muscle car sedans back in the day and are now. But the concept above is a pony car coupe. The GTO was never a pony car coupe. My point is why not call a spade a spade and call that thing in the picture above a FIREBIRD?!?!?!?!?!

Hear this, If GM produces that thing they will go bankrupt. A good opportunity to buy some put options.

GM has a "poison pill" incase someone tries a hostile takeover, it's called the Pontiac Aztek.

HAHAHAAHAHAHA! Sadly though, that thing is better than the current incarnation, imo. I think part of the "problem" is that the Challenger is SOOOO good of a design it makes others look bad. I liked the photos of it. I litterally had chills looking at it in person at the car show. It was the rebirth of vintage muscle car. I'd like to see the Camaro a little further along and resemble the 67 a bit more, but either way, power is back and that is a good, good thing!

I agree, but I do think they should take the path DCX isn't in the weight department. They should follow the Corvette's path to lighter weight and more power. DCX is taking the stance they did back in the 60's and 70's. "If it's heavy, just put a bigger motor in it."

I don't share this philosophy even though I do own a 300. I bought it because it's BOTH big and powerful. If I were to buy a two door/2+2 with a manual it's would HAVE to be lighter than my 300. (Ford is unfortunetly going the same route with the Shelby GT500 at 3800lbs.)
