Strange. Contemplating a large four door sedan, but then goes for an $80-90k sports car.

Whatever.

I'm going to raise this as far as his seriousness of getting an SRT8:

I have run against american muscle for so many years, been there done that, zzzzzz, lol. I would rather see the looks on a guys face who has spent double and more than the cost of my SRT and the entire time he looks over at me, I got that familiar poop eating grin again. Heck I may get dusted by him, in the end. But I bet he will give the due respect the SRT is due next time one rolls up on him.

$39,920 got me my ticket of admission to the best bang for my buck and all beautifully wrapped in a 4 door saloon no less. Sedan-man Mark gets to ride again.

FreebirdSRT (Mark)
Did you miss that I said he owned both? He had a silver steel SRT8 for about 3 months, sold it while it was still holding the resale value well enough that he got basically what he paid for it, and 4 months later he bought a 2002 996 Carrera 2 coupe. The SRT8 was fast, but you had to get on it, and obviously the handling dynamics are very different from a 911. What I'm saying is, I don't think he'd be surprised by an SRT8 giving him a run.

drivers car

I love Porsches. I've had a 914-6 full race and a bad ass 88 911. Both were heavily modded, but one notable thing comes to mind.

A Porsche is a very one dimensional car. Very fast, very capable, but not much good for anything else. Then there's the traditional high maintenance costs and god-awful repair bills. I even did most of my own wrenching and still spent a fortune on parts!

Sure does bring back some fond memories! I loved them both.

Steve, have you driven a 996 (I'm guessing the 996 is the same way)? I haven't tried the one my dad got yet, but I have driven a 1999 911 (same chassis, still 996 model, some minor differences like 20 less hp and less stiff chassis and things like that) in Germany and it's nothing like the older Porsche's. Even the 993 was still a tail happy driver's car, but for the 996 (and presumably 997) things got toned down a LOT. It's faster in all respects than the 993 was, but much much easier to driver, much more comfortable, and more plush.
And compared to the 930 (which is what an 88 911 was) the 993 was like a cadillac.

Yes, my good friend in Tampa has a Carrera 2 with a bit of tuning and a snorty pipe on it. They have reduced the tendency to oversteer but I always liked that part! My friends car is very quiet (windows up), rides pretty good, but still has no cargo space and no interior room. That's what I mean by one dimensional. A great car that I will always covet, but no versatility like my big ole SRT. And some outrageous repair bills and expensive maintenance like you would not believe!

By the way, he digs my car! Says it has the most split personality of anything he can think of. Smooth and quiet to ferocious roar in a split second!

Is the water-cooled version of the 911 still expensive to maintain? When I had mine the main cost was periodic tuneups that involved adjusting the valves. Now that there are hydraulic lifters that's eliminated, and the water-cooling means less expansion and contraction so the time between rebuilds should be much longer than 80K.

Why get a 911 when for less money you can get a Viper? Is the 911 that much easier to live with on a daily basis?
